He didn't like the Bulls and Hawks doing end-runs around territorial rights agreements. Stern was always looking out for mid-market owners, he clashed with the big guys like Reinsdorf, Turner, and Dolan/MSG. Contrast with MLB where Reinsdorf and Turner were among the biggest power brokers.

We've discussed this before in a thread you started: viewtopic.php?f=92&t=119278

EDIT: as for the Mets, how long were they on the superstation feed, I wonder? I know sometime in the early-to-mid '90s when teams all finally started taking TV seriously, MLB and the NBA started getting very cranky about the superstations and charging them fees to reach outside their territories. The Cubs started offloading games to cable in '96, I think, and the Braves started Turner South around the same time. (The Sox had always been more committed to cable anyway, as we all know.) It wouldn't surprise me if the Mets backed down from superstation telecasts earliest and hardest, effectively leaving the national WOR feed with no destination programming.

Here's Sandomir on the superstation wars from 1995, and the Mets aren't even mentioned: https://www.nytimes.com/1995/01/10/spor ... overs.html

Quote:
Last Friday's ruling by a United States District judge on superstation telecasts was a split victory for the Chicago Bulls and WGN, who first sued the league in 1990. Every antitrust argument waged by the league was tossed out handily by Judge Hubert L. Will, as he said WGN could send 30 games a season to more than 30 million cable subscribers. Yet, Will stopped short of granting WGN's ultimate request to air 41 telecasts.

"We disposed for good that notion that superstation telecasts adversely affect the ratings of other teams," said Joel Chefitz, a Bulls attorney.

But the N.B.A. persuaded Will that it can impose a fee on WGN's telecasts, but not one as onerous as the one the league proposed.

Amazingly, Commissioner David Stern said the league will appeal the 30-game limit, even though the league's rationale has repeatedly proved faulty. If the league couldn't prove that the WGN telecasts were impacting other markets when Michael Jordan was playing, he would appear to have even more of a problem with Jordan retired.

It's time for Stern to surrender -- which he won't.

Does this ruling affect baseball, the other superstation-impacted sport? Probably not too much. When he was commissioner, Fay Vincent waged a holy war on WGN, TV home of the Cubs and White Sox, and TBS, land of the Braves. But he lost. Will's ruling probably confirms the WGN and TBS rights, and the validity of baseball's superstation fee system.

interesting, ok thanks for reminding me.

The Ewing draft to the knicks in 1985 was fixed. Then he had people looking at him. So I don't think any draft after that was ever fixed.

No. You're naive. He did it in 1985 cuz the league was struggling and he wanted to get a star player in New York.

It's actually a crime to do fix a draft. And once Stern was making millions in the 1990s why would he risk going to jail and/or being sued by other NBA teams for being screwed out of a pick. Makes no sense. Why would Stern give a shit who gets the number one pick at that point? And jeopardize his career? When he's making millions and life is good no matter who gets that damn pick. Why?

I don’t think you follow the NBA enough to accept how corrupt it is/was.

How did Cleveland get their hometown kid in 2003?

Chicago get their hometown kid in 2008 with barely any chance to win?

New Orleans get the top pick right after the nba sold them to new buyers?

That’s all speculation after the 1985 Draft lottery bent corner scandal.

The real, constant corruption is the officiating of star players.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy the NBA is where it is now.

I just accept the way we got here.

How did Tim Duncan land in San Antonio when Boston was the favorite to get the #1 pick? Big time Celtics vs low Spurs. And the Spurs got him? The lowly Spurs also got David Robinson in 1987 as the number one pick. Small market team.

Why did they decide not to fix it in those years?

Why didn't the Knicks or Lakers get the Duke guy last year? Lowly New Orleans got him. Why?

Maybe the NBA was trying to grow small markets in both those cases.

Worked in SA.

Gothca

So some years they want to help the big markets. And some years they want to help the small markets. Who decides what to do every year? And if it's that simple, doesn't it make sense not to commit a crime and just do a legit draft every year?

You're a dumb ass.

Sure I’m a dumbass.

Why do you have trouble accepting corruption?

Let’s not get started on the MJ/gambling conspiracy.

There is nothing wrong with rigging the lottery. They need to do it more often.

You realize they hire a law firm to handle the draft lottory. What stake does that law firm have in being corrupt and jeopardizing their reputation? Oh, and going to jail?

I thought the NBA’s corruption was accepted like Epstein didn’t kil himself, but apparently there are still some true believers out there.

It's a consulting firm. Consulting firms do what their clients tell them to do.

But whatever they pay them isn't worth the risk of breaking the law. Cuz they're already successful without the burden of the risk. Especially if the NBA hires them. They don't need the risk.

Rigging a draft isn't breaking any law. Its not like they are falsifying income statements

Have we seen any documentation of the actual process outside of the “show” where Rachel Nichols is drunk, and oversized envelopes are handed out with numbers inside them?

Also, what law are they breaking?

Who is standing up to the lawyers a corporation like the NBA could employ?

And why would the NBA take the risk of telling an outside party that they want it fixed. What if the consulting firm said "No, we don't feel comfortable doing this." Now the NBA has a problem knowing someone else knows. And then that firms leaks it to the media after turning down the NBA.

You people don't think right. I always have to explain shit to this board. It's frustrating. But I'm willing to do it. One day you guys will thank me.

It's fraud. They're costing the other teams in the lottery a chance at making more money with a good player by fixing the draft. Tens of millions of dollars are at stake by doing this. Over years. For the teams that got screwed.

Revenue sharing doesn't include ticket sales. That's just the national TV deals.

The shit team gets 5k a game. The team that got the great player gets 20k a game. Plus local sponsorship. Plus their local TV deals. Plus merchandise and concessions sales.
