My grandfather on my mother's side fought in that War. As a kid I saw a picture of him on a huge horse and a hat that looked like it was three feet high :!: He was in the cavalry. I asked him what it was like and he told me that the Turks were the fiercest warriors and that he hoped that I never had to fight in any war let alone against the Turks. :( :( :(

Yep. It pretty well was decided by artillery supported by cavalry. There were actually very few large infantry battles. Armies dug in with trenches resulting in poison gas being deployed.

There was a great WWI documentary in theaters just last year. My grandfather fought in the battle of Verdun. Of course he died in like 1969 and didn’t seem to tell my dad much about it.

Sorry not Verdun, it was Marne. We pulled out some old paperwork my mother still has for some reason.

I assume you mean the Second Marne because the United States was not involved in the first "miracle" either.

They Shall Not Grow Old.

"The First World War" series by the BBC was excellent. It can be watched on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjNbBPzOs4Y or Amazon Prime if you don't want to buy the DVD.

No he was in the Austrian military before the war even started. He was Croat and obliged to fight for the Austrians. Grandpa left Europe after he got wounded and left for the US with his brother where they settled in Kansas City and worked in the meat packing business. There is an amazing story of how the Catholic Church back then was pretty much demanding that Catholic Croats go back to Europe to fight for their "homeland". It included basically "Shanghighing" them in loading them on ships heading to Europe. This included what my family told me about the history back then.

This podcast consists of 6 episodes--each in the 4 hour range---covering the events leading up to and concluding with the end of the war. What the soldiers went through is astounding......this podcast is worth your time.

If you want another good WW1 movie may I suggest Breaker Morant? Lost Battalion with Rick Schroder is not bad as well.

Its an entertaining listen but it pulls almost exclusive from a few select books. You can read Barbara Tuchmann's Guns of August and Peter Hart's The Great War and basically glean everything from that podcast plus a lot more. Not denigrating what Carlin did, I listened to it and loved it, but its ultimately a pretty shallow overview.

1917 was good, but 2005 was even better

After I get done watching inception I will list a few books I have read on WW1 in the past year, The end of the war(Versailles) is almost as interesting as the lead up to the event itself.
Wow this cast is incredible .DiCaprio,Levit and Tom Hardy. Wow only bad part is they killed off Cillian Murphy too quick. SO who was the best of the last decade,Hardy,Levit or Dicaprio?

Saw it. It seems to be angling to be more of a technical masterpiece in filmmaking rather than an epic about the war itself. Saving Private Ryan this is not. In fact at some points you barely saw anyone on screen except for 2-3 individuals. This isn't a problem just mentioning it to give you all an idea of what to expect generally. Great scenes in the trenches in the beginning and end, though again we don't spend too much time there. If you're into really savvy filmmaking (or an attempt to do so, depending on how you look at it) and drama then you'll appreciate this. If you're looking for a hardcore war story that's filled with a lot of historical details and reenactments then you'll probably be disappointed.

It’s simply fantastic at making the viewer feel like a character in the movie

It’s ridiculous how they market this with Firth and cumberbatch as their combined screen time is probably five minutes.

The stars are unknowns to me and we’re great. Maybe a little young from my understanding of ww1

My wife and I saw it yesterday. Can't say I liked it or disliked it. It was just different and not what I expected. Wouldn't see it again.

Yeah. That is a pretty fair representation of what I saw also. It was interesting and I didn't hate it but I can't say that I liked it either. It was really DIFFERENT.

My grandpa fought there. Before that, he was in Mexico chasing Pancho Villa in the US Border War. He drank the hard stuff, so even though he was pretty damn old--in his 70s and 80s when I was around--he might as well have been 200. So he didn't talk much, but one night he did, and I wish I had a tape of that. All horses and telegraphs, looking for food and girls, and taking apart and re-building your own supplies.

Saw it today and thought it was great. I had heard it was single shot, which I assumed meant each scene was single shot. Not the whole movie!

Variety had some dumb column about why anything but 1917 should win Best Picture because it feels too predictably important. I'm not even linking to it because it's too dumb.
