Yeah. I used to tell high school kids all of the time to play their asses off because you never know who is in the stands watching you. This includes scouts for colleges and universities. That was the way it was ages ago also when I played only now with the advent of technology kids can send game film of themselves to the colleges and universities that they might like to go and there are know large scouting organizations that act as recruiting agents for colleges and universities. Parent have to be aware, though, that some of these companies are pretty much only in it for the money they charge for their services.

The Hawk, did you play with my neighbor, Bobby Feltz at St. Joe? He was a good pitcher at Notre Dame High school and best friends with Luzinski.

He wasn't at Joe's when I was there. What year was he there?

It was fun for me since I went there when the Bears trained there. My baseball team used to practice out there informally when the Bears were training in the blazing heat of Rensselaer in summer. Watching George Halas and Abe Gibron run the hell out of these rather large men(at least at the time they were considered huge) and seeing some of the real great Bears of all time, Bill George, Doug Adkins, Ditka, Johnny Morris, Caseares(sp?) Caroline, and of course, Butkus, Sayers, and Piccolo, is something I will never forget.

One of the great things I saw during that time was Bill George order O'Bradovich and another player out of the lounge of a bowling alley because they were drunk and harassing a waitress. O'B took a step toward George and then thought better of it. Bill George was a really really tough man and no one messed with him. Johnny Morris was also quite the ladies man in them days. While Jeannie was back in her town, little Johnnie was wasting no time getting his. :drunken: :drunken: :drunken:

My last year playing was 1965-6 so I just missed him.

I didn't even know the Big Ten had hockey. I thought Minnesota, Michigan State, and Wisconsin played in that league with UIC and Michigan Tech and some others.

They do. They want at least one of the Indiana/Illinois schools to do it but no one can come up with the $50 million from a rich donor to get it done.

Notre Dame is also a Big Ten hockey member.

Yeah every few years you see an article about it.. got a bit of a push after penn state built an arena for it a few years back. I remember buying a t shirt from the club team years ago when I was a freshman..

Yeah, hockey is a completely different animal.
My son played went to Mankato (Minnesota State) for a year, but did not play. They have a practice team and even that is really tough to make. These D1 Hockey schools are big time programs, but for many of them that's their only big time program.

Already said....D1 in the area is limited (Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State). The other D1 teams are the Mankato and Duluth's of the world. UIC, ISU, Northern.....they're either D3 or club. It's entirely different hierarchy than football and basketball.

D1 Hockey is pretty fucking awesome, though.

He's one of only two guys from QAS in the Notre Dame H.S. Hall of Fame and Bobby was the last one- from the Class of 1967!

Seems light, doesn't it, dolphin? I guess most QAS guys go to Loyola.

You mentioned Greg Luzinski being your neighbors friend. He always struck me as a good guy. I was at a game at old Comiskey where he hit the roof in left field, It was an awesome shot.

I'm certain I've told this story before. Feltz lived across the alley from me. When those guys were in high school I was a little kid, 3 or 4 years old. Feltz and Luzinski were playing catch in the alley and my dad was mowing our lawn and I was running around like a nutty three year old does. Luzinski got annoyed with me and he picked me up and sat me on top of the fence and told me to stay there and watch the big guys play catch. It's not something I remember. But when Luzinski got famous in the big leagues my dad would tell the story.
