A spring in my refrigerator door broke. My wife took a picture of the spring with her Android phone. She went to Google and began typing in "part for Samsung Model ..." Before she had finished typing "part" links to places selling the spring appeared.

We unplugged Alexa a long time ago. If I didn't need to bet races on my phone I'd go back to something that was not Internet-enabled.

Google returns search queries before you're done typing them? I know it autofills a lot, but that's not furnishing links.

It furnished links. Obviously based on the photo she had just taken combined with the word "part". That's pretty sophisticated.

Realistically, I'm not going to go back to a flip phone, but I'm going to consider an iPhone. Not that I think Apple is less than evil itself, but at least it isn't driven by Google. Probably better to spread the evil out.

I have always had an issue with privacy and technology. I still do some things in a very old school way. Now I use Alexa more than I ever thought I would. Damn near every device in my house is connected to it. I know that the right hates Google but unless you go back to not carrying a phone it's going to be difficult not to have things tracked. Trying to limit the information is the only way to go unless you decide to go off the grid. It's not going to get easier either unless everything you own and drive are really old.

Not to mention that unless facial recognition tracking is banned it doesn't matter what any other company knows about you. It will make companies having a profile on what ads you are more likely to click on feel like the good old days.

One of my favorite events ever is when my wife asks Alexa a question and Alexa doesn't have the answer and comes back with that "I don't understand the question" or other similar canned responses. TO watch my wife get pissed off and yell at a damned box is hilarious.

Programming the Alexa to answer questions the way I like is my favorite way to use it.

I just do not want to be bothered by a phone call or electronic interruption when out of the house doing anything. Personal preference. If I was working for or at something it would be different but I just don't like to be interrupted when I am doing something.

If someone took my phone when I'm not outside the house I would be so much more productive. I can stop doing anything cold turkey except playing with my phone. The addiction is bad

My 4 year old gets the same responses...or she'll ask it to play a song, but it won't know what song she's talking about. Hilarious.

During a Christmas dinner at a friends house, I was able to get Alexa to play Slayer. The volume was pretty manageable so it took a good 3 min for one of them to actually hear "Hell Awaits" and look at me with a big eye roll.

For that...I love Alexa.

My 4 year old got Run to the Hills at my in-laws house when we were celebrating Christmas...it was very loud like every other thing with a volume setting in their house. We all got a good laugh out of that.

I absolutely cannot stomach the idea of getting an Alexa. As mentioned above, a smart phone is enough.

reality is a lot weirder. if what you claim is true (and it very well could be), it's not something Google accomplished. This is machine learning. For decades we tried to write if-this-then-that software code to recognize and identify what's in images. We couldn't do it. Then about 5 years ago machine learning was born. Now we feed a super computer thousands of examples, and it fucking learns to program it's own code based off the examples you give it. what your wife experience is a matrix of switches that turned on and off in a pattern that taught itself how to know what a spring looks like.

i dont have one either. not that i hate the idea.. i just dont trust the corporations behind it. everyone says 'if it was offline only and didnt need the internet i would get one' but if it were like that it wouldnt work. the whole point is it learns and continues to know what to do in an ever changing world because everyone is using it, and giving it new examples.

im fine with the theory, just dont trust amazon for anything other than free shipping.

I don't think it's any more complicated than photo recognition being used on a photo taken with a phone using Google's OS and then being acknowledged by Google's search engine. Still very sophisticated. And quite intrusive.

thats what i was saying. the photo recognition wasn't coded by humans. we tried for two decades to program machines to do it, and it never worked very well. once we applied machine learning algorithms, they figured it out in a few months. machines taught themselves how to recognize objects in an image... its fascinating and terrifying.
