Bryant is better than Arenado and any scenario that involves dumping Heywards contract is a pipe dream.

I find it really strange that Colorado would do this 1 year after extending him. the deal is not outside the realm of possible, but I would bet the Cubs will have to give up a lot more in terms of valuable prospects in addition to Contreras and Heyward for Arrenado.

Yes Bryant is better than Arrenado, but keep in mind. Bryant is not signing long-term with the Cubs. There is something to be said be selling high.

Just trade Bryant and Heyward to the Rockies for Arenado and a couple pitching prosects?

Heyward might really blossom in Colorado.

Heyward might really blossom in Colorado.

Cubs will have to pay 50% of Heyward's remaining contract for a team even to consider.

If this 2020 team wins 90 games and advances in the playoffs with all it's baggage maybe crazy Joe's past lunacy managing will get scrutinised more.

Wow. Didn't realize he had a guaranteed year left.

It feels like he has been dragging the team down for years but last season was just his first of a 2 year contract.

Giving that sack of shit a 2 year deal and paying him more than Lastella is a firable offense.

Laura Ricketts on not allowing fans ask questions to ownership at the convention:

"It seemed like, to us, people were asking the same questions largely," she said. "But we're looking for other ways to be more accessible, we're going to be on the Ryan Dempster show, we're going to find some other ways to try and be more accessible to the fans and we may bring it back next year.”

Lol

All goodwill this ownership garnered is now gone. This looks to be the first convention not sold out. Most fans are rightfully disgusted with this offseason and given the high prices for everything Cubs, the perception is that it is all about the dollars now with ownership. Let's see what happens once the Bryant grievance issue is announced but not confident they will get value there either, so this season looks to be 83-85 wins and no playoffs once again.

Holy shit

Why even say that? They would have been better off saying, "We are not taking Q&A at the convention, but we will be available via social media at MANY points during the season."

The Ryan Dempster as a legit entertainer thing is mind boggling. The dude is barely mildly funny in only the smallest of doses. Dr Ken or good dolphin would be more entertaining IMO.

Didn't Dempster cheat on his his wife with his maid? And yeah, he's not funny at all and IMO annoying.

lol, is there any damage control that doesn't get assigned to Laura Ricketts? Someone could spill a coffee in the press box and Laura would be the one made to say that this doesn't represent the Chicago Cubs and they'll be exploring superior cupholder options in the future.

Dempster's Harry Caray "impersonation" is the worst. I would rather watch a Leslie Jones full movie than two minutes of his bullshit.

At least Will Ferrell was funny with his Caray bit.

They should bring Ferrell in to do that bit.

Dan Bernstein wants the Cubs Convention canceled, at least thinks it will be a terrible ordeal because well:

Endured SO MUCH.

Dan is finally turning on Theo and the Cubs...

The Cubs' title was four years ago already, now the subject of its own kind of nostalgia. The last two seasons have ended with a grim Epstein vowing renewed determination amid needed changes, after his free-agent signings keep blowing up in his face and the organization fails to develop pitchers. The Cubs hired a new and unproven manager and yet another round of new coaches, while the front office has been restaffed and reordered in an effort to better compete. Those prospects from years ago are now close enough to free agency to spur the team's desire to trade some of them, lest they pay an onerous luxury tax on total payroll. We've endured the exposure of an owner's virulently racist emails and the ugly saga of Addison Russell's spousal abuse and suspension that ultimately resulted in his dismissal.

The players from 1969 are dwindling in number, the longtime Wrigley Field organist retired, there's little clarity about whether large swaths of the metro area will be able to watch Cubs games on television and this offseason has brought no big league acquisitions to date, to this point sending the message that there's more desire to hold onto money than to try to improve their chances of winning while they can.

And there's nothing on the schedule for this weekend that says any of the owners will be around to take questions about an increasingly uncertain future.

Glad to read this because it's all true but can't listen to Bernstein. He is about as condescending as Dempster is annoying and not funny. Kap unloaded on the Cubs a couple days ago so Bernstein is way late to the party...

What's amazing is that he was the lead cheerleader for the Cubs, and how they dealt with Russell last off-season. Now it's a huge black eye because the Blue Check Marks have decided so? What did they want the Cubs to do? Castrate Russell? Cut him immediately? There is no possible solution they would not have been criticized for eventually.

Quote:
The first home run of spring training has already been hit, and it came from Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein.

And he got all of it.

Tuesday was a defining performance from him in Mesa, Arizona, one with a value to the franchise beyond wins and losses, establishing an organizational tone on a pair of subjects more important than his usual topics of roster moves and contract negotiations. They were Epstein's most extensive and heartfelt words yet on the domestic violence issue that has engulfed the Cubs in the wake of shortstop Addison Russell's suspension by MLB and his first thoughts about the release of Joe Ricketts' racist and Islamophobic emails that have embarrassed the organization, inflamed tensions and threatened longstanding relationships.

He spoke without notes, without a sheet of talking points and recommended phrases. He chose his words carefully as always but remained conversational and real, sure of himself while admitting all kinds of uncertainties.

He spoke. Without notes!

Speigel asked Theo some pretty good questions on M & P. Theo's a master at wiggling away from issues asked though. Theo threw a couple of thinly veiled shots at Joe.
