Of all the pro-athletes I've met, he was probably the biggest asshole. And this was to a group of kids in the early 90s.

I'm surprised he didn't make this an all-caps thread title.

Hawk shitcanned LaRussa in the middle of the 1986 season. Back Jack's debut was as as September call up in 1987.

He should've used some of that pent up anger against the Jays in the ALCS when he got rocked. just like when Sattle rocked his ass two years later.

I still think that Bere & Alvarez should've been the games 1 & 2 starters. BlackJack was a horse yeah, but only ready for the glue factory by September of that year.

You'd think they would have been better in the 80's if this were the case...

I agree with Black Jack about LaRussa being a bad guy. He led the entire steroid epidemic while manager of the A's and beyond. And I have no doubt that he would have put that light on the sign with a switch after a camera read the catcher's sign. As for McDowell, though, I never liked the guy and his attitude at all.

Yep. He had a band Stick Figure. He said in a number of interviews that he would rather make the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame than the baseball.

Alvarez was un-hittable going into the playoffs, and he was the stopper in the series. He won game three with a great performance. Bere got pulled early in game 4, and they won with trade deadline acquisition Tim Belcher in relief.

It would have been a PR mess to not start McDowell, but he was owned by the Blue Jays. Losing to Dave Stewart twice in good starts by Fernandez blew that series. If they had started Alvarez in Game 2 it would have been interesting. Also, playing Dan Pasqua was a pretty big mistake. Not that more Bo Jackson at bats would have made the difference.

Fun Fact. Lance Johnson became the first player in MLB history to hit zero regular season home runs, then hit a postseason home run.

The second time it happened? Scott Podsednik, 2005.

Well, Johnson hit over .300 in that 1993 season, and I think he had like 12 triples. His hitting alone would have shown up as a positive somewhere on an analytic sheet.

Pods is different, but anybody who watched any Sox games in the first part of 2005 knew what he meant to that lineup. If he got on base, it was as good as a run at least half the time as he would steal second, got to 3rd on an Iguchi bunt or ground ball, then get knocked in by Everett or Konerko. MANY times the Sox were up 1-0 three batters into the game. I think he had 4 steals in a game three or four times during the early part of the year. He was nearly unstoppable on the bases. He wasn't the same after hig leg injury about 2/3 through the season. What he brought to that team doesn't up on a stat sheet.

I don't disagree. Lance Johnson rarely walked. And while he was fast he was not considered a great outfielder similar to Pods. Pods was universally hated by the stats guys. I remember Bernstein saying the White Sox would have still won in 2005, and likely would have been a better team if they had not traded for Pods.

I don't think it's as simple as only looking at stats.

I loved McDowell as a pitcher. As long as they don't rape anyone I could care less what their personality off the field is.

This is getting better and better. Will there be new players who've been with multiple current cheating teams go into great detail like Jose Conseco did with steroids?

I agree. I also think a very underrated player on that team was Uribe. Not flashy but a real pro and very good clutch player. How many championship teams did he end up playing one anyway? At least three, right?

I really thought that Alvarez was a very good pitcher when he was on. When he was on, his stuff was very unhittable. His trouble was when he got behind and had to throw a fastball that they knew was coming.

Tom Seaver was quite a pill as well.

Oddly my MIL met Albert Bell at the Casino in Joliet and said he was very nice.

He was a good pitcher. Not great but certainly good. When he lost velocity on his fastball, he pretty much was meh.
