True, but it's also exploded in popularity and cost. But at least it's not a boring hell hole like DFW Metroplex

No, it really isn't. Just got back from there in fact and my short trip only confirmed my opinion.

Was great when I lived there for a year. I'll probably consider moving back at some point.
You could live there for the next 30 years and you'll still be considered a Yankee (ie inferior).

Sounds like you were around some assholes. That wasn't my experience when I lived there. Most Texans I met were great

DFW Metroplex is as described....a bunch of clustered Schaumburg's.

Still....there is local flavor if you look for it. I spent a lot of time in Plano and I'd strongly consider moving there. It's all about where I can find work while cutting down on taxes.

the locals I worked with and met in the DFW were very cool. Oddly enough, transplanted Texans in the Midwest I've met fit all stereotypes....odd.

Kirkwood why are you so defensive about your segregated playland?

Nah. the people I've dealt with have always been fine. Texans are typically nice and polite. It's the general attitude of Texas superiority that puts me off.

Is this “superiority” anything like the comments Kirkwood and GD have made in this thread?

I don't think most Illinoisans exude that feeling. They probably don't either beyond this board.

Honestly Zippy, I’ve worked with plenty of people from Texas.

MANY (not all) have a confidence about them which can seem unearned, but that doesn’t bother me.

I have met a few Texans who are all about that Texas heritage, and yes it is very fucking off putting/weird.

To me tho, it’s very similar to big city residents who can’t stop stroking off to where they live.

Oh yeah, this guy who wants all the people floating around the middle class to leave his state because they are “losers”.

Add this guy to the list.

There's no superiority. I plan to leave IL in the next 2-3 years for other reasons than taxes. But I'll definitely miss it and probably make a return. Where I choose to move is not everyone's cup of tea so if it's shit on by board posters then so be it. Every place has it's problems. I won't piss and moan people that people are being mean.

So all the pissing and moaning you’ve been doing in this thread will cease to exist once you move to Albuquerque?

Albuquerque is pretty nifty town. Not as cool as Sante Fe but interesting nonetheless. People in New Mexico are odd but harmless

Illinois is great and Chicago is the best city in the world but I would choose to live in Southern Africa before I go back for anything more than an extended visit or short contract.

I was in the Plano area a couple or times when we played the Mickey Mantle World Series in that area. Nice people and they welcomedmy team and I nicely. Great barbeque and steak there. 8) 8) 8)

I love the city of Chicago. I hate the people who run it.

You haven't lived in Illinois for years and you didn't leave because of property taxes, just to even out whatever hypocrisy you may be finding with Kirkwood.

Solid point.. best fresh water source in the country. In 20 years, that could be huge

Not 100% sure on the causality there, nor that there are more Californians than there are people in states abutting the Great Lakes, nor that they could override any treaties we have with Canada regarding water usage.

Moved to Colorado 3 years ago being retired and having properties here nearest big city to me is Delta. Make a right on to the highway and the next stop light is 30 miles away :) Property Taxes were the gating reason. Lived in Summit Taxes $4800 2 acres in Colorado $700 no brainer. Less stressful and just gorgeous scenery

I moved to NC in 2019. I know of two others who moved here (one is a board member who may not post here any more), and a third who is thinking about it because he has built a large military base component to his construction business and you can't shake a stick along I-95 without hitting a base.

Do you miss IL a whole lot?

No, because I am in Chicago probably 5 times every two months to visit my dad, who is in his late 80s. What I do miss a bit are urban areas, but I get downtown about once every six weeks and I am focusing weekend getaways on bigger cities every couple of months. Raleigh and Durham have downtowns, but they are pretty small. Most of "urban non-ghetto" Raleigh reminds me of Skokie Blvd and Cicero Ave from Montrose to Dempster.

Raleigh is by far my least favorite of the four cities (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and Cary) but I work in SW Raleigh so I am there more than I should be. If that's all that was there, I would have moved elsewhere, maybe Western SC. Chapel Hill is a great college town, Durham has really invested in revitalization and gentrification (it was kind of a shithole in the 70s despite Duke, and Cary is new and is much more suburban. I'm also much closer to the country, which I enjoy. Last Friday, it got up to 68 degrees and there wasn't much going on at work, so I drove the slightly more than two hours to the ocean.

We went to Greensboro last year and found it to be a pretty nice city.

North Carolina is strange in that it has all these medium-sized cities all somewhat evenly distributed, or at least it seems strange to me being used to how Illinois basically falls off a cliff past Chicago. Like, Greensboro, what is Greensboro, why is Greensboro? How many just-under-a-million, Great Place To Raise A Family* cities does a state need?

*That's always the line that hockey players use about signing with the Hurricanes over in Raleigh: it's a great place to raise a family. It's code for "no one likes hockey very much so I get to make seven figures while everyone leaves me the fuck alone."

Durham had a shitty downtown when I visited there about 8-10 years ago, and man, it was a shithole once you got outside of downtown and the Duke area.
