I want my husband and kids to buy me a dog without saying it. I'm an ass. How do I get a dog here without doing it myself?

September. I want a puppy right now! You know what, I want a big huge golden retriever. I will get out there and walk it and deal with all the pain in the ass dog stuff.

This may seem weird but try to tell them at dinner. Say I am wife/mom and I go to school and all the stuff around here. I don’t always feel great and a Golden or yellow lab would make me feel better and the walks and companionship will heal you tremendously. If it gets that far you can give examples of how you continuing to feel worse can impact their lives.

Tell someone who you know can't keep a secret and will mention it to your husband.

why do they have to buy it for you? Are you that needy for attention?

If you want a dog go get one....that way you will know you get what you want.

  Yes I sure do. I love dogs, but a dog in the midst of the chaos of life would be horrible right now. We have too much going on to treat a dog right and it would not be a good situation for us or the dog.

Why dont you volunteer over at Dupage Animal Control, or get involved with a Golden rescue?

Rescues are few and far between and they need a lead dog in the home. I don't know if I could do animal control. I want a perfect beautiful big golden retriever right now.

Just be direct. Pussyfooting around is only going to make your feelings stronger and piss off your husband when the dog issue finally comes to light. Over the next few days, wait for the right moment when your husband is in a good mood and straight out ask or tell him.

Honestly though I would try to wait about 6 weeks, 4 weeks at least. Trying to housebreak a puppy can very tough. Don't purposely make it even harder by trying to do so in the middle of winter. It will be miserable for the both of you. Yes it can still be shitty weather in late Feb and early March, but the cold/snowy stretches become fewer and further in between and the snow/ice tends to melt quicker as the temps warm up. That way you get the dog housebroken by the spring, work on walking and obedience and whatever over the summer, and by the time the Holidays and next winter rolls around, ideally you have at least a mildly well behaved four legged member of the family.

Run a stiff wire down a leash and attach to a collar that’s been attached to a metal hoop to hold form. Walk “the dog” around the house and neighborhood making sure you tell your family how beautiful your new puppy is. They’ll get the hint or commit you, could go either way.

I wouldn’t be a fan of potty training a pup in winter but have had breeders tell me it’s a great time as the dog gets down go business fast instead of goofing around.

This sounds pretty solid. Also don’t just go buy a dog, it affects everything and everyone in your household. I take care of 95% of things for my dog but I need assistance occasionally. Start laying the groundwork for a dog to arrive in April or May. Why would everyone be against it?

we bought a golden out here in the sticks a while back, Hearts of Gold or something like that. She made me into a dog liker. Just take him out to see some golden puppies and tell him you'll take care of the dog.

Oh, and buy a female. Don't buy a male.

I'm still struggling with why you wouldn't go pick one out and do it yourself. If your husband does it, he'll most likely pick the wrong puppy anyway.

City of Fools is correct....The male Weim we had ruined it for me. He peed everywhere.
