I'm not specifically talking about "banning guns" but basically people my age and above, including myself, don't want to ban guns now. I was in high school for Columbine but I don't think it really had the impact for me that it would if I was doing active shooter drills as a 1st grader. It never truly felt like my school was at risk. It certainly seems like all schools are now.

I cited them because just like the current rednecks, future rednecks aren't going to change their mind about guns because of active shooter drills. Nothing substantial is going to change with gun control laws in our lifetime.

I don't know what will happen exactly but there are fewer and fewer rednecks as a % of the population.

people were shooting blanks? that must have been wild

For those of us who have been to the range at least once it wasn't THAT startling, some took Xanax before we got going. It was planned and we knew what was going to happen so some went to their rooms and locked the doors and it didn't serve the purpose. No different than on days with unannounced fire drills when I look out my window and see the fire and police departments pulling in...I know what's coming next...

This would have been said about pretty much any generational change for the past 60 years. Do you think the rednecks supported ending segregation?

As others have pointed out, rural life is declining at a pretty significant rate. Many of those kids are moving to the "big city".

Chicago residents are doing the opposite.

Gun enthusiasts will stay so. It’s the (much larger) population that was indifferent to guns moving towards an opinion (mostly towards restriction/control)

my 5 year old nephew has an issue with claustrophobia. He's also very loud. His school told his parents that on active shooter drill day he should stay home because he's scaring all the other kids. Apparently, when they all went and hid in a closet he started screaming over and over again "we're all gonna die!".

Doesn't get much more realistic than that.

Same was said with marijuana, same sex marriage, relaxed liquor laws, tobacco, etc. etc. etc.

Legally guns will remain a part of the US. Economically they'll stay strong as a minority is extremely supportive with their wallets. But culturally their interest and approval will continue to disintegrate.

Disagree. You're close to my age and we knew back in high school legal weed and same sex marriage were coming sooner or later.

But it sounds like you mostly agree with me on this topic.

How do you know that? Just trusting some partisan study you saw or something?

About half of my FB friends are military friends from places like Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia, etc. Many of them have kids. I can only think of a single one out of the 100+ that don't hunt and take their kids hunting. I'm quite sure you and Rick are wrong about kids of rednecks not liking guns any longer.

Well it's hard to take you seriously when I know several dozen people like the ones we describe, I don't think you know many based on your posts here for the last dozen years, and almost to a person the ones I know don't think and act like how you say they do. It leads me to believe you read some type of partisan/clickbait nonsense about it and are just applying that as fact.

Pretty much all opinion pools of "young people" show they have far different opinions on guns than older generations. I understand a portion of the population will be raised from birth to be very pro-gun. You keep on citing "rednecks" like all decisions in America are made based on the will of rednecks when pretty much every generation has major changes that would stereotypically be against the wishes of rednecks. I have friends who are raising their kids to shoot guns at an incredibly early age too. I also have deeply religious friends that are probably teaching their kids the Seacrestian way of talking about gay people.

Also, you seem to be intentionally ignoring the larger point here. It isn't that the generation that does "run and hide or die because a bad guy with a gun is here" drills will become 30 and say "Let's make America a gun free society". It's that the resistance to any and all new gun control measures(see JORR) will see a change with further generations. Gun technology will also push things more towards what Nas and me are saying through giving no other choice too but ultimately I don't see it eventually being an argument as to whether a family member reporting to authorities that they believe their immediate family member is a danger will be met with "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED!!!!!!!!!!!!".

You said a lot of words and I still can’t tell what you think. Are guns going to go away or are things going to mostly stay the same? You seem to be saying there will be some nebulous middle ground where guns aren’t banned but people don’t like them anymore like they do now. It’s pretty confusing.

You're talking about a minority (and declining) subset of the overall population. Also, overall, hunting participation is declining.

As a metropolitan/suburban dweller who hunts I'm a dying breed. I don't know any friends or co-workers that go hunting. I know two who enjoy going to the range. Now, compare that to my boomer dad whose friends all grew up in suburbia yet all enjoy hunting and going to the shooting range as a hobby.

Guns won't be banned. Things won't mostly stay the same either. Future gun control measures will happen as there will be less resistance towards any change because "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED!".

Arguably, 1994 is the last time we had any sort of meaningful gun legislation passed and it seems virtually impossible to do it for the forseeable future. I mean, armed militias took to the streets to protest only being able to buy 1 handgun a month, which seems to be a pretty stupid but mostly harmless law. I can't imagine it going well if anything at the federal level was done that may actually have an impact.

I don't believe public opinion will be as strong as it is now in terms of "SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED!!!!" with the generation after ours. If you want me to tell you the exact future then I guess you'll be out of luck.

So things will basically be the same as they are now except you will hear Shall Not Be Infringed less than you do now. That clears it up a bit.

There will be a gun control measure on the same level as the 1994 assault rifle ban. Is that clear enough?

It’s clear you keep agreeing with me

Quote:
Studies have shown the ban has had little effect in overall criminal activity, firearm homicides and the lethality of gun crimes, while there is tentative evidence that it decreases the frequency of mass shootings.

I understand what you are trying to say but you don’t seem to understand that “another” is invalid when used in the context of your post.

Are you saying that the 1994 assault rifle ban was not substantial?

You seem to be arguing if it worked or not. It pretty clearly was a substantial attempt at gun control.

Nothing substantial is going to change with gun control laws in our lifetime.
I don't agree with you. I think there will be another substantial gun control measure in our lifetime.

Do you understand now?

I understand what you are trying to say but you don’t seem to understand that “another” is invalid when used in the context of your post.

Are you saying that the 1994 assault rifle ban was not substantial?

You seem to be arguing if it worked or not. It pretty clearly was a substantial attempt at gun control.

There’s really no argument - it didn’t work whatsoever.

So your argument is that we are going to pass another meaningless piece of legislation that will then expire 10 years later, and you somehow think that’s different than “nothing will change.”

I understand now. Strong argument.

Ideally, it will be a better piece of legislation than the 1994 ban.

Obtuse FavreFan is obtuse. I hope I did that right.

I’m not being obtuse. You said something like the 1994 bill would be done again in the future and things would be different but when you say that it’s logical to point out that bill didn’t really change anything at all.

I don't know if the next piece of substantial legislation in gun control will be effective or not. I cited 1994 because it was the last substantial attempt. I tried to make it simple for you since you were having such a hard time understanding but it seems like it was more about you simply wanting to argue and you actually did understand the point.
