My Aunt and Uncle are retired and rent a house in the FL Keys from just after NYE until the end of February. Last year there were 14 of us in a house that wasn't big enough...

This year, there will be 10 of us in a house that is quite large. Outside of airfare and a shared car rental, the trip is basically free. We're doing this again in a couple weeks.

I'd rather travel with friends than family.

My FIL once offered to buy my wife a car if she would break up with me back when we were dating. Needless to say we weren't close. He passed away a year ago.

I've never met my MIL. I think she lives in the Dominican. My wife has never spoken to her in the 13 years we've been together.

My wife has a sister who I met for the first time a year ago. We started to get to know her and her family and even went to Boston go to her kid's bar mitzvah, but now we're fighting with her over their dad's estate and lawyers have gotten involved. I doubt we ever speak to her again once this is resolved.

Summary: Wife's family is great cause I never have to see them.

that sounds awful

Like every other proposal for the family trip has involved renting a beach house or some shit like that for a week. I can get on board with that because I won't be trapped with them...can escape for a bit if needed. The cruise thing just doesn't work for me. Went on one once. Hated it.

There are rumblings of renting a beach house for a week next year for my in laws 50th wedding anniversary. For some reason I think they want to go to Galveston, TX. Geez. I may attempt to swim to Cuba. Either that or drive to Austin for a few days or something.

years ago, we did a week in Cape Cod and shared a house with my ex's brother and family. These are people I got along great with and genuinely liked. By Day 2 the wives were getting on each others nerves.

Well duh. Two catty women can get on eachother's nerves even if they were renting Paul Konerko's 14,000 square foot Arizona estate.

We rent a house with in laws every year. The brother in laws are fine. The significant others are all ticking time bombs.

from my point of view that shit needed to be nipped in the bud from the get-go. I would NEVER go see somebody else's kid play sports unless it was like in the Rose Bowl and I was given free transportation.

I’d rather avoid going to my own kids sporting events (I do go without complaint), fuck going to a nephew’s basketball game or niece’s volleyball. And it’s not that I don’t want to see them compete I just wish there were no other parents there as they take it far to seriously. Sorry, little Jonny isn’t getting a d1 scholarship... he is slow and pretty average height.

I wasn't a big sports kid but played (poorly) little league for MANY years. Neither of my parents saw me play ever, not once. I'd ride my bike or they'd drop me off and run errands while the game was on. I was, and am, totally fine with that. I don't need my parents to watch me play sports to make me feel loved.

Right.. if my dad showed up at a game, especially a road one, I’d be worried something was terribly, terribly wrong.

I was going to say... In laws are certainly inherited rather than chosen. I can't imagine having such awful problems as some have expressed. I even get along with ex in laws better than most.

Before my FIL turned into a jag and said he didn't care to see my wife anymore, we got along fine for the most part. When my MIL isn't downing bottles of vodka, we get along OK as well.

I have to give her credit though. She has been sober since about the end of August (a VERY long stretch for her), and quit smoking cold turkey at the same time so I'm very cautiously optimistic things continue on this path.
