Aikman is very much an interesting QB to me. When he was good, he was great...the stretch from 91-96 is outstanding. His last 4 years were not good. He's in because he's a guy Dallas doesn't win those SB's without. His playoff numbers were terrific.
I mean, three SB rings over a 4 year stretch is pretty fucking good.

The zero clunker seasons makes no sense because like Eli, MANY QBs are taken early in drafts because the team sucks and are picking top 5/10.

To me, the best criteria seems to be if you were one of the top three players at your position for three years and top ten for three others.

Exactly. And that's what I was getting at with Aikman. He had an elite stretch that put him in.

Reasonable...and Eli was neither of those.

You don't have to choose. It's ok to have high standards for the HOF. It doesn't need to be a binary choice of playoffs matter or they don't. Look at the entire body of work - stats when compared to guys in your era, team success, accolades, etc.

If you are a QB and you were never in your entire 15+ year career a serious MVP candidate or an All Pro, I think that's all you need as a strong foundation of an argument to keep a guy out.

But Rivers has been a serious MVP candidate. Stafford probably falls just short of that.

The more I think about it, Rivers gets in, too.

That's a good start. Keeps Eli and Rivers out

Cam Newton wasn't a top three quarterback for three years. He may not have even been a top ten one for six years.

Ideally the HOF would have a finite number of spots. Say, 20 guys at every position. Want to add a new guy? Got to find one to kick out

Matt Ryan was a top five QB in the eyes of most for exactly one year.

I think the longevity thing often gets overplayed and misapplied in these discussions. If the Chiefs win the Super Bowl and Mahomes never plays another down or even just looks mediocre the rest of his career, I'm still more comfortable considering him than Eli or Rivers. I know there isn't a current Sayers equivalent at QB already in the Hall but I see that as more a matter of circumstance than anything else.

So basically every NFL mvp automatically gets in?

Matt Ryan is worthy of a participation ribbon.

On one hand, I agree. On the other,
Quote:
Players whose career was of similar quality and shape
Dan Marino*, Fran Tarkenton*, Drew Brees, Brett Favre*, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Joe Montana*, Philip Rivers, Roger Staubach*, Jim Kelly*

When talking about Eli's postseason success, it should be mentioned that in his Super Bowl runs he beat a 13-3 Favre team and a 15-1 Rodgers team at Lambeau.
