Do they still have the requirement for parents to turn in a log showing that they supervised X# of hours with their 16 yr old driver? That was a royal pain in the ass (to make up).

I had to learn how to drive stick by myself.

My Dad had bought my Mom a new car and I inherited hers. It was a 1989 Ford Probe GT and I fkn loved that car. Anyway, it was in the shop and they traded in my Bronco. My Dad drops me of at the mechanic and says.
O.k., drive home...

I understood clutches from riding motorcycles and three-wheelers, but it was still a giant pain in the ass during rush hour.
so, you could take that approach, but I would not recommend it.

Otherwise. A school parking lot is a great place to start.

Industrial park is a good idea too!

while i was still on my drivers permit i got stuck on the exit leaving kmart parking lot, it was really steep and i kept stalling the car. a few cars waiting behind me. it took me what felt like forever to get the car up the hill and make the left on to the busy street

I had a very similar situation...then realized I was in 3rd gear.

When I learned how to drive a stick, my dad stuck me behind the wheel to drive around the block a couple of times. Then onto the Outer Drive down to Streeterville & into the Hancock parking lot with the nine level circular ramp stopping a couple of times each level up and down.

I taught my wife in a large empty parking lot next to Lincoln Mall.

Yes they do. Daughter got her permit and within a week drove my wife’s car into a ditch and took out sign making a left turn. It was a quarter mile from home. I witnessed it out my kitchen window. I was done laughing by the time I got to them to make sure they could drive out. Calling the road commissioner to tell him we needed a new sign was a new experience.

The next one is learning in the middle of a quarter section hay field.

Nope. No, it was a $500 piece of shit purchased exactly for that purpose. It lasted exactly another year before the transmission died on the guy he gave it to when I went away to school a few months later. Just like I taught my wife on my old pos Mitsubishi a week or two before I traded it in.

My youngest almost made a beeline for a baseball light tower the first time I let him drive. Stupid me thought it would be safe to let him try in the middle of any empty park right after I'd unloaded three bags of baseball gear.

I taught both of my kids on the campus of the local community college on the weekends and evenings when it was quiet over there. It worked out great because there were lots of roads and stop signs and so forth on the campus instead of just driving in circles in an empty parking lot, and some occasional traffic as well. We only did that for a short time before I started just taking them out on the roads in the neighborhood and slowly escalated from there. It really doesn't take too long to get them on the road, there is really only so much you can teach them before you just gotta hit the roads and let them start dealing with it.

Someone will be driving themselves to concerts!

My oldest was six and big enough to reach the pedals of the hay baling tractor safely, so he started early with both clutching and watching implements. Middle son was quite small for his age but made up for it with piss/vinegar attitude, so he soon followed. I think my daughter was 13 when I pressed her into service. They all got time behind the wheel of a golf cart/Gator and the farm pickup, so the technical parts of making the vehicle move were no surprise, but the part about being in traffic/rules of the road took time and practice.

I had my boat license when I was 12 and was driving by myself at that age, so familiarity with driving wasn't a big deal to me. It was just the turbo and the clutch in a car that took a few weeks to master.

My daughter was afraid but she still didn't want to listen to me. When she pulled into the driveway she was sure to tell me that she did a better job than I do. Just usual teenage stuff.
