GD really has problems with men showing emotion.

I’ve read this is a trait of closet homosexuals.

The truth is that the overwhelming majority of people publicly emoting over his death had next to no personal relationship with the guy. Our nation is collectively mentally ill

I think there is some truth to this but I think you are underestimating what it is like to see a guy in his early 40s who had a two decade run in the public eye as not only rich and famous but seemingly incredibly healthy lose his life while going to his kids basketball practice. If he was 65 and this happened it's probably far different.

It gets pretty much everyone at any age thinking about how things can end in an instant.

It really should. Especially if you are over 40. Is it over the top? Maybe, but it was quite a shocker to one known to many. I would say after Monday everything I looked at except here seemed to have died down.

I'm hearing something different. He meant more to the sports world than MANY of us recognized. That is probably the only shocking thing. I'm hearing MANY talk about a guy who was different than the way the media made him out to be. He wasn't really aloof at all. He just didn't do the club thing like MANY athletes. He seemingly would go out of his way to do really nice things for people who shouldn't have mattered to him. He was also willing to mentor any player who asked.

Is Kobe the most important athlete to a sport to have died this young? At the time of his death he is arguably in the top 10 of all time in his sport. For god sakes, Vince carter joined the league before him and is still playing.

Unless I’m missing someone obvious, the closet comp is Roberto Clemente. Maybe Roy Halliday. They died younger but I don’t think either was in Kobe’s class in respect to the game.

No matter what a person thinks of Kobe the person, father, or mentor the one thing that was undeniable was that he had a profound respect for the game.

I think that is what has really came across these past couple of days. I don't think it was inauthentic either. You saw it from the moment that he entered the league to the day he left the league.

I was not the ultimate fan of his as a player but i always respected him as a competitor. Don't think that he was the best of his era (Goes to Tim Duncan) but when you put it all together he was the most consequential of his era.

Wrong.

I forget Vince came into the league a few years older than Kobe. Good catch

This is the same weird phenomenon as you see with people like princess diana. It’s like a kind of munchhausen

I think Shaq will "change" for a year or so then you go back to the norm. Princess Di was a little different but I get where you are going. You've never felt a connection to a celebrity or some asshole lawyer/politician/something that you didn't know personally? I get you are stoic and self contained but you have a sentimentality to you at times. There has to be a connection somewhere that's not rational.

I felt bad for a little while when Payton died but little while is an hour or two. People act like it was a death in the family. I know Facebook sucks but I see people I know literally saying they are grieving

Well, I aced my comment, but...

Was waiting for this. That people are all freaked out might point to the alienation so many people feel. Wanna be a part of something.

Social media brings out the sentimental in us, too. Plus, the shock of the event imprints us in weird ways, and the fact that kids died just makes you feel helpless.

But there are a lot of negatives about Kobe (thank goodness he's not a punk rocker with an ex) and his wife. Kobe also got sanctified for being a good father; those are some low expectations. Now he's being lionized as a renaissance man and global citizen. It's easy to get swept up in this movement, and it feels good to do so. If people want to treat Kobe and company as royalty, that's cool, but the emotion sometimes looks fake.

My criticism is separate from how is being portrayed. I'm in the party that agrees you can hold off on the negative stuff, especially when we all know it. I also am of the belief that, while you are defined by your actions, you aren't completely defined by any single act.

I agree that he appears to be a much better NBA statesman than he was publicly perceived.

Those Grammy's people can GTFO though. He most certainly didn't have an impact on their lives yet. Even further are the regular people I have seen.

I think that is what I was going for. However, that Trib article this morning puts some of that in context. Still, would you fucking celebrities, just for once, try to be real?

My thesis: If Kobe were the same person with all the same accomplishments but played in OKC, his death would have received a fraction of the recognition that it has in the entertainment industry.

I just added shit on, but what you said is totally clear. Same with Nas.

I myself am still processing it because there are so many related issues, like the one in the Trib article.

Dolphin you just sound weirdly bitter.

Anyway, what pushed this tragedy over the top for many people was the fact it was t just Kobe that died.

The fact there is video content out there of Kobe with Gianna at basketball games, training with her., talking about her are the things that really cut deepest for me. I’m sure I’m not alone I’m feeling that as a parent.

I can completely personalize kids and their parents getting killed on their way to a travel game. I'm not emotionless. It's sad in the way a jedi feels a disturbance in the force when a planet gets blown up. It isn't sad like when one of the parents of my kids died of cancer.

My criticism is separate from how is being portrayed. I'm in the party that agrees you can hold off on the negative stuff, especially when we all know it. I also am of the belief that, while you are defined by your actions, you aren't completely defined by any single act.

I think that definitely came through in your posts.

I'm slightly more empathetic than GD. As a father your most important responsibilities is to provide and protect. Kobe dying with his child stung more than his death and I am/was a fanatic. I'm not a robot but I am not generally a guy who cries. The thought of that level of helplessness brought tears to my eyes and then a little while later I was fine. I thought it was just something that I thought/felt but it appears most parents on my Facebook feed were/are affected for the same reason.
