LYNWOOD, Ill. — A 19-year-old was shot and killed while attempting a robbery in south suburban Lynwood.

Police said Diondre Crosby-Nelson, 19, met up with two others just before 7 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Lynwood Sport Center on Glenwood Dyer Road. The teenager had arranged to buy a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 from Johnathan Arroyo-Ortiz of Indiana.

According to police, during the transaction, Crosby-Nelson ran off with the phone without paying for it. Arroyo-Ortiz got out of his vehicle and chased Crosby-Nelson, shooting him in the buttocks, back and head.

The 19-year-old was transported to St. Margaret Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Arroyo-Ortiz is in custody and charges are pending. He was the one to call 911, but police said evidence does not indicate that he opened fire in self defense

A woman was in the car with Arroyo-Ortiz at the time of the shooting, and police say she is cooperating with the investigation.

WGN spoke with the family of Crosby-Nelson, and they said he was bipolar and dealt with mental health issues throughout life.

So, im curious, if you get robbed like this during a craigslist transaction, do you have no recourse other than standing there and watching the thief run away? if he ran and caught the guy and beat his ass then he doesnt get charged with a crime right?

shooting him in the buttocks, back and head

Kind of odd to list in that order.

this is why you never go to a craigslist meetup without your sock-gun.

Yeah, but a headshot seems a little extreme

You can't kill someone for stealing your phone.

You shouldn't. I can understand how that happens in the heat of the moment.

I don't see this is an issue - you can't enforce your own justice code, especially when it puts others in harms way. This is like the crazy lady who started shooting at a robber in a parking lot after he ran off with stuff from a Costco or Walmart or something. Yes, if someone stole something from you your only recourse is to watch it happen while calling the police or make a call on whether the item(s) is worth getting into a physical struggle during which you may sustain injuries.

That lady was INSANE because it had nothing to do with her. Someone stealing your car, snatching your purse or your phone can make you behave irrationally for a minute. While what this man did was extreme, I think it was a natural instinctive human reaction.

He fucked up, he should have said he was chasing the guy and the POS turned to him and he thought he had a gun. That's plausible enough to beat a manslaughter charge.

Simple solution: have all Craigslist meetups at the local police station parking lot.

It seems like if you feel the need to bring a gun with you on a Craigslist transaction you should pay the eBay fees and sell it there.

Disagree completely. If somebody steals from you you should be allowed to shoot them.

if the guy entered your home and stole your phone you'd be able to shoot him in certain states right?

Again, I hate to keep bringing up evolution, but we are what thousands of generations have made us to be. This guy's natural instincts led to a terrible decision. Take a look at his record, if it's clean, I dunno, give him a year in the pokey.

I don't know. A couple weeks ago a guy with a concealed carry shot at 2 guys stealing his girlfriend's car in Jefferson Park. No one was in imminent danger. Didn't hit anybody, did manage to shoot up the car (so it's not like he wasn't aiming at anybody.) Police said no charges will be filed against the shooter.

I think that's fucking insane. That shooting happened around 7 a.m. in the morning when all kinds of bystanders could have been around, including kids. Anything could have happened. Private citizens who open fire in situations like that must absolutely face harsh consequences.

No, we don't really keep open tabs, except for maybe a round of drinks.
