Yes for the Cubs he is, for the player no. Now the question is, does it piss Bryant off enough that he won't sign long term with the club?

I'm going to think its not going to matter one way or the other
It mattered.

Hmph. This did not age particularly well.

Did it? I don't think he was ever signing a deal before free agency whether he was a FA a year earlier or not.

Funny how short memory can be. Lots of criticisms of Bryant's 2019 season. His 2018 season was even less impressive that 2019.

So let's re-word this.....Have you seen this guy hit the last 2 seasons?

I'm not in the hate Bryant camp. He's a very very good player...one of the best players on the Cub. Regardless of the grievance or anything else. He's a Boras client. He's going to go to Free Agnecy and get a contract that the team providing it will live to regret. No fault for Bryant for accepting it. No fault to Theo and Cubs for NOT wanting to be the one holding the contract.

The Cubs were never going to offer a market (i.e., insane) contract...and now they basically can't even if they were willing.

That doesn't mean Bryant wasn't ever signing a deal before free agency. It means the Cubs knew while he was still in the minors they wanted to move on from him as soon as he wasn't incredibly cheap.

I thought there was a report out there that the Cubs offered Bryant an 8yr $200 million extension in 2016 that he turned down?

If true I wonder what he thinks he’s going to get at age 31 . He’s soooooo mad though !!!

I wonder how much pressure players are under from other players, their agents, and the union, when it comes to these decisions. If the Cubs offered Bryant 8x$25m in 2016, and he projected himself to get 8x$30m or better in 2022, what do you do? On one hand, $200m is more than enough to set yourself up for generations...so why risk injury or subpar performance? On the other hand, he will have already banked $50m+, so I guess he may as well shoot for the moon.

$25million a year seemed to be a pretty good market deal in 2016. He's gonna have to really rake these next two seasons to get that same type of deal at age 31.

Pretty sure if the Cubs had to do it all again, they'd absolutely do it the same way. Not sure what the big gotcha is.

The gotcha is that Kris Bryant is so mad Max Madsen had to trademark the name for fear of Bryant claiming it !!!!

That he wouldn't care by now.

Nah, a gotcha would be if his caring hurt the Cubs.

It doesn’t make sense to risk it for Bryant to refuse the 8x25 extension. Add the guarantee of that plus the money already earned and compounded interest up until he could get 8x30 is dumb.

So he is either a greedy jag (doubt it), his controlling dad is (maybe), his agent is a dick (certainly) or players union pressure. You pick. I guess the last thing possible no one talks about is he might not think being a Cub or Mr. Cub is worth it or a big deal.
