I remember that movie.
I liked him and was way too young to understand drug addictions. Even during the Pirates scandal and with Willie Wilson and Keith Hernandez, I just thought they were hurt. I guess I had a progressive understanding even at that early age.
I really enjoyed the stolen base era of baseball, before we were all enlightened that getting an extra base and making the pitcher anxious for the next couple of batters was a bad thing. I was fat and slow but I loved guys like Ricky Henderson and Ron Leflore stealing 100 bases each year.
Most of those guys piled up the hits, too. Wilson had like 230 one year, and they all hit .300 in their primes. And it seemed like ten guys were routinely stealing 70 or more. When Henderson broke Brock's single-season record, I saved the paper. I was certain that this was historic.
I teared up as a kid when the Tigers fans berated the young LeFlore. I was eight and also not clear about drug addiction. I still resent the adults in the room who were not as emotionally moved as I was.
