Been getting a couple different salesman making outlandish claims knocking on doors trying to sell them for the house . Anyone here taken the plunge and done it ?

I knocked w they've come a long way in the last 10 years, how many watts does each panel produce? And how large are the panels?

What do you do when the sun doesn't shine, Nas Thumberg?

My understanding is that they charge using UV rays, not necessarily the sun...UV rays are always present.

One of my neighbors wants to install them, but the HOA won't approve where he wants them, because they're an eyesore.

We thought about doing the roof panels. Might end up doing that on a machine she’d roof we are thinking about building for remote power.

They are not really an eyesore. Unkempt porches, garages, lawns and otherwise overgrown brush are MANY times more the eyesore than a few panels on a roof.

I did the math on this last year, it was something like 10-15yrs before you break even with the cost of the panels. And that is without them breaking. How do they hold up to our winters or hail?

Solar panels are installed in far worse climates than ours..they're durable.

Unless you are sucking a TON of power, I am not sure this is worth the investment. It certainly would be cool to have though.

Always heard about tax credits and selling power back to utilities. Friend of mine around Boston does great. Don’t know the numbers but it is up and down as to whether you draw from Com Ed or give back. Likely seasonal.

Down south I saw farms of them where they tracked the sun movement. Obviously not for homes but a ton of free power after paid off.

Being on a coop for power we get hit pretty hard by electric bills and we pull a lot of kw here. It’ll happen eventually, as soon as I don’t have 10 billion other things to spend money on getting put in.

Wouldn't think you'd use much juice on a farm, figured ya have a LP tank or Nat Gas supply for heat and cooking.

They haven't become much more efficient than ten years ago but that are vastly cheaper. The battery banks are really where the gains are made though, so you don't sell as much back to the power company. But batteries are still expensive and don't last long enough to make a lot of cents. At this point, it's probably another 10 years before it all comes as a no brainier.

If you are considering installing solar panels don't contract with Iconic Energy. Just my opinion, nothing else. To be clear, just my opinion.

I did it about 3 1/2 years ago in California. It worked out very well for us. We bought the equipment but got a very friendly and low interest loan. In a little more than 4 more years we will pay off that loan. We have a minute electric bill and when we sell the house we can sell the house without an electric bill for the new owners which will jack up the price of the house.

When we bought them, there were both federal and state tax breaks for installing them. I also wrote a guarantee in the contract to put a floor on the amount that we would pay on the system.

There were a lot of different system options and companies when we bought and some of the tax breaks and incentives have changed since we bought. I did do my homework before I committed to it and it has worked out. Our electric bill per month 4 years ago averaged around $400/month and it is now less than $250/ year.

Just like TV's and most electronic.. they get better n cheaper every year. A buddy of mine put 12 panels up on his roof when he had his built around 05 or 06, he was saying he could get those same panels and batteries now from the same company for half of what he paid and they're twice as efficient..and this was 18 months ago he said that. He's happy with his system but it hasn't paid itself off yet as of 18 months ago.

If this was such a great deal, they'd be on every house. The fact that someone is out soliciting contracts to install these means someone is making money off of it. I'll listen but I'm incredibly skeptical. My electric bill is not a problem for me. I'm not interested in solving problems that don't exist.

In-laws have these and they usually have a non existent bill or a surplus. I have no idea how much he paid for install. They are obviously spread all over the roof but I wouldn’t say his are an eye sore since they lay pretty flat. He lives in Kansas and they don’t get snow like they do here so I suspect you’d want to keep the snow off them which would be a pain.

No natural gas supply on farm and crazy wife went geothermal which is a heck of a cooling system but I’m not crazy about the heat side.

Beyond that,we pump a lot of water to water the cows, the electric motors on the grain bins can really pull the juice and just various other things... It’s not a 24/7 draw but there are days when the transformer is humming. Have a second home site on farm that is vacant and basically only electricity used over there is a deep well, a couple or three (depending on tine if hear) electric fencers and the furnace fan and due to the coop fees the cost per kw is a little bit more than you’d like.

When infrastructure isn’t shared by hundreds or thousands of people per square mile (population density is around 6 per square here) it costs.... but that’s okay... I get capital credits when they come in under budget..yeeeeh me.

At one point had a ton of aquariums... plugged in electric usage monitors on those and shut them down.

Yeah it seems the government or greenies should be all over your situation to subsidize you as an example. Just getting pumps and silo fans on solar would be a giant relief I am sure.
