If this was such a great deal, they'd be on every house. The fact that someone is out soliciting contracts to install these means someone is making money off of it. I'll listen but I'm incredibly skeptical. My electric bill is not a problem for me. I'm not interested in solving problems that don't exist.

They are popping up all over the area around here. Clearly they make a hard sales pitch. I remember a few years ago they were pushing you to change from ComEd to some cheaper competitor. Everything I read about it made it seem like a scam; cheaper for a while then the bill creeps up faster than a Comcast statement.

From an aesthetic standpoint I think they do standout and detract from the home’s appearance. However it really depends on which way your house faces. If it faces north they are installed on the back so it’s less noticeable.

I think coloring of both the roof and panel frames make a difference as well in terms of appearance or standing out. People probably don't even notice them after a while. As far as resale appearance it may scare some away but the low bills might also keep more around.

Roofing is really changing. As an aside I am noticing more of the colored steel roofs moving into town. They used to be strictly rural especially cabins and such.

There were so many popping up around my home that I suspected they were pitching some sort of free install. I did a quick search and found this...

So what do a company’s marketers and salespeople mean when they say ‘free solar panels’? Usually, they are referring to solar leases and power purchase agreements (PPA’s). Under these solar financing arrangements, a solar company will put a solar system on your roof at no up-front cost to you. This sounds great – you get to say that your home is powered by clean energy, and can even point to the solar panels on your roof to prove it.

But the reality is that you do not technically own the system, and the solar energy the panels produce is not free. Under solar lease agreements, ownership is retained by the solar company, and you pay for the electricity it produces. In essence, the company has built a small power plant on your roof and is selling you the electricity.

What happened to the fish?

Consolidation and attrition allowed me to reduce the amount of tanks run over time. Changed filtration on main tank to a more efficient as far as electricity consumption vs ease of maintenance.

Unless you are sucking a TON of power, I am not sure this is worth the investment. It certainly would be cool to have though.

Being on a coop for power we get hit pretty hard by electric bills and we pull a lot of kw here. It’ll happen eventually, as soon as I don’t have 10 billion other things to spend money on getting put in.

Wouldn't think you'd use much juice on a farm, figured ya have a LP tank or Nat Gas supply for heat and cooking.

No natural gas supply on farm and crazy wife went geothermal which is a heck of a cooling system but I’m not crazy about the heat side.

Beyond that,we pump a lot of water to water the cows, the electric motors on the grain bins can really pull the juice and just various other things... It’s not a 24/7 draw but there are days when the transformer is humming. Have a second home site on farm that is vacant and basically only electricity used over there is a deep well, a couple or three (depending on tine if hear) electric fencers and the furnace fan and due to the coop fees the cost per kw is a little bit more than you’d like.

When infrastructure isn’t shared by hundreds or thousands of people per square mile (population density is around 6 per square here) it costs.... but that’s okay... I get capital credits when they come in under budget..yeeeeh me.

At one point had a ton of aquariums... plugged in electric usage monitors on those and shut them down.

Yeah it seems the government or greenies should be all over your situation to subsidize you as an example. Just getting pumps and silo fans on solar would be a giant relief I am sure.

I’m not sure how you’d run the fans, or more importantly the unload motors on battery power.. I mean, sure it’s doable as diesel/electric subs exist and we aren’t talking that kind of power but I’m not a leader of a country and my crop can’t compete with the cartels on a price basis so my battery budget... not so big..

Even small panels to run the shop though would come in handy. I have enough paperwork to do for the government.. not sure I want more. You are seeing a slot of panels going up at farm remote farm sites and a few wind turbines as well. Those got a bad rap a few years ago as suppliers had a hard time getting parts for repair from China and a lot were erected and never turned a kw.

I own my system. There are all kinds of different deals out there and people need to do their home-work on the kind of system that they are getting and also the reliability of the equipment as well as the company selling their system to you along with the guarantee that they offer.

Solar panels are going to be pretty useless when the sun runs out of energy though.

Since the earth is just now entering a Little Ice Age, I'd be laying in a supply of blankets and fire-wood. Its also a great thing that the US is pretty much energy self sufficient. The rest of the world is not so blessed.

Wow, Frankie. That is really mean of you. You must not be a good Christian person. Try harder not to sin in your thoughts and comments, please. You might upset some one.
