That is the dumbest idea I've ever heard...and look forward to those hand picked opponents kicking the shit out of the teams that picked them.

MLB is seriously weighing a move from five to seven playoff teams in each league beginning in 2022, The Post has learned.

In this concept, the team with the best record in each league would receive a bye to avoid the wild-card round and go directly to the Division Series. The two other division winners and the wild card with the next best record would each host all three games in a best-of-three wild-card round. So the bottom three wild cards would have no first-round home games.

The division winner with the second-best record in a league would then get the first pick of its opponent from those lower three wild cards, then the other division winner would pick, leaving the last two wild cards to play each other.

To use the AL last season as an example, the Astros with the best record would have received the bye. The Yankees, with the second-best record, would have had the choice to pick from among the Rays, Indians and Red Sox. Boston had the worst record of that group. Would the Yanks pick them or avoid the baggage of a series with their rival? It would create a ton of strategy and interest, and this is what MLB wants to sell. The Twins would then pick next as the other division winner, and then the A’s with the best wild-card record would play the team not chosen by the Yankees or Twins.

The plan is to have this all play out on a show on the Sunday night the regular season ends and have representatives picking teams on live TV.
If you're gonna do this, might as well let Pete Rose host the Selection Show. I don't even think JGWP could come up with something so unbelievably stupid.

Note; I do like the idea of a best of 3 Wild Card round, but just stick to the two teams like they have now. Season ends Sunday, Game 163 or makeups on Mon, WC series Tues 7pm, Weds 7pm, Thurs 1pm, Division Series starts Friday/Saturday.

I like the expanded playoffs(maybe the White SUx could actually make the postseason this decade) but the second idea sucks.

MLB and NFL have the correct amount of playoff teams. It actually means something to make the playoffs in those leagues. None of this watered down NBA shit or a 7 seed goalie standing on his head. Just like there is no reason to be playing basketball and hockey into late June, there is no reason to be playing baseball in November.

Great. The 82 win Oakland A's vs the 84 win San Diego Padres in the Fall "Classic".

If they're going to take it back down to a 154 game regular season and expand the playoffs, fine. That "choosing their opppnent" idea has to be part of the shit flung against the wall they know won't stick.

To expand the postseason otherwise, would need the addition of a doubleheader a month to save enough days.

It would be kinda cool to hold the WS in some warm weather destination.

The handpicked opponent idea could be fun for the reason you mentioned. If this were the NBA or the NFL it would just be the strong picking on the weak, but with baseball it's usually anybody's series.

i would be in favor of letting the #1 seed in the NFL pick their div. round opponent.... you think the ravens are picking the titans or the texans if they had a choice as the #1 seed? as the #2 seed the chiefs ended up getting the far weaker opponent.

I think I hate this gangly Powder-looking motherfucker more than I hate Selig.

It's commendable that this prick has made himself convincingly as or even more hated than his predecessor.

Nothing increases a games exposure and popularity by making it difficult to find and cost money to maybe see depending on where you are and the blackout restrictions associated with your location.

The season should be May 1 with the playoffs concluding by October 1.
Inter-league play needs to return to being a 2-3 week feature in the middle of the season.

An 84 win team in the playoffs may generate more revenue for the league but that just means more shitty teams getting bounced in the playoffs. I won't lose sleep over it, but it's not going to save the game.

I would also like to see the WC be best of three. You could either use your format above, or even have a scheduled doubleheader on Tuesday. It would be an amazing day of baseball with 4 games during the day.

I want the WC team to have to sweep a pair of road games to advance. Preferably a DH.

MLB doesn't schedule doubleheaders anymore. They are only used for makeup games. DH's in the playoffs will never happen, and I'm ok with that.

WC Team #2 is on the road for a best of three game series at WC Team #1. No need to travel and give WC Team #2 a home game. Make them win two games on the road to advance. Give the WC teams Monday off, make them play Tues, Weds, Thurs (if necessary), then start the Division Series on Friday or Saturday. Makes it more like the regular season and even though it's still a small sample size, its better than a 'one and done' scenario. This would also likely force the winning WC team to use their 5th starter at least once in the Division Series.

They'll never go back to scheduling Double headers. No chance.
The season is way too long. April games are ridiculous, as half the times play in shitty weather. Same with October playoffs. MLB doesn't care. I'll never understand how they think empty stadiums in April and many rescheduled games due to weather is good for business.

Uh, then you don't know that MLB actually can't because it's part of the CBA with the Player's Union that says MLB cannot schedule double headers unless one of the games is a makeup.
