I'm thinking that someone made a small fortune off this Old place.

What was your trip there like as a yout JORR?

Never went there. That was way too far south for my mom to take us. I think RR may have some stories about it though.

We went once, probably 1977, I was never a Big Fan of roller coasters, and the other rides were mediocre compared to Cedar Point. The OldeTime theme annoys me.

Went a few times in the dead of winter. First time was great. From then on out several rides were out of commission. I remember the trapeze artist dying and iirc, went once more, virtually all the shops were closed and my parents drove home talking about how it couldn't last much longer.

Even as a kid, it was so bad I couldn't have cared less.

Never went. I was close enough to ride my bike to Great America. That was plenty for me.

What has been there in the 40 or so years since it closed?

A Chevy dealer, a gas station and a bunch of open space.

Name an ass, some gas, and some grass.

JORR, I'm planning to make a Tres Hombres style New Mexican meal. Tell us a story. What was your most ambitious cooking experience? How did it turn out?

The most ambitious was probably the year I was married to my first wife I prepared La Vigilia, Feast of the Seven Fishes, on Christmas Eve. It turned out great. I forget what all the dishes were, but for sure there was bacala with chickpeas and tomato sauce. I also had oysters.

Here's a better story though. I usually cook an Italian dinner for our club meeting each month. Generally, I show up at about 2:00 p.m. and get the gravy going. One month I decided to make braciole. It's traditionally made with flank steak, but sometimes I like to use pork. I rolled them up, braised them, and then let them simmer in the sauce until dinner.

One of the guys in the club, Ernie the Tailor, who has since passed away, started bitching that I didn't use flank steak. Tony the Barber blasted him so hard for criticizing my cooking that Ernie resigned from the club in disgrace. We let him return to referee the bocce tournament later that summer.
