But you're hitting on exactly what I'm saying. The why of it. Why does a person feel their identity doesn't coincide with their physical sex? The obvious answer is because of the smothering and rigid roles that have been imposed by society. That's why indulging such thought is really conservative and narrow minded despite Golden Jet's desire to maintain his progressive bonafides.

Wade is basically agreeing with a ten year old that girls don't play basketball and boys don't wear makeup, instead of correcting the child's ill-informed opinions and opening up his young inexperienced mind.

I imagine that the why is locked up in brain chemistry and society's changing views on gender and sexuality. Gay people essentially didn't exist in the public consciousness until the 1980s, but they for sure existed in the shadows for MANY years prior. The same can be said for trans people.

That's an interesting question. If I said the answer included something like "A girl wears dresses and a boy does not" would you agree? What if I said "A girl plays with baby dolls and a boy plays with trucks"? What if I said "A boy has short hair and a girl has long hair"? At least traditionally, those are all fairly widely accepted gender roles.

What happens when a "boy" or "girl" wants to do things not associated with their gender in those questions?

What a strange response.

Why is it strange? Gender, at least in this discussion, is about behavior. I don't believe any medical intervention is being considered outside of counseling.

So those questions are valid.

I don't think any of those things have the slightest thing to do with the definitions of "boy" and "girl". You're pushing some very conservative ideas and pretending they're progressive.

Come on, Rick. You know very well what a boy is and what a girl is. Do we need to call in a scientist?

Sure it did. I can make it clear for those with less cognitive ability than me though such as WFR.

"Transgender" without medical intervention is basically all behavioral. It's living your life as would be expected as a "boy" or a "girl" would and we all have our own mental projection of what those behaviors are. If for some reason, a genetic male feels that wearing a dress and makeup is what they are most comfortable with then they would be living life as a "girl".

You seem to be acting like chromosomes are the only defining characteristic of a boy or girl. The term you are looking for is genetic male or genetic female.

What is your issue with what Wade is doing here? He seems to be letting his kid act in a way that goes against the traditional idea of how a boy or girl acts. He, and the kid, acknowledge that they are genetically male.

Because they are.

I love to dress in drag. I love dollhouses. It doesn't change the fact that I'm a man.

Why can't you move past your conservative view that there must be defined behaviors for each sex?

Still did not answer the question, but I am sure your unparalleled intellect realized that. What is a boy doesn't mean putting quotation marks around the word and prattling on about nothing but the answer. If you believe that everything is a post-modernist constructed identity and biological sex is meaningless just say so.

It seems like you think you have some gotcha moment by saying that gender roles exist.

If all behaviors were just acceptable for boys as they were for girls then the entire concept of transgender would be pretty much meaningless.

Gender and sex are two different things.

There are only male and female sexes (unless you're intersex and born with both parts).

There is a sliding scale with gender because it's "what you feel". MANY times your gender and your sex match, cis gendered. Other times it doesn't, trans gendered.

Why don't you wear a dress and makeup every day? If your child had a teacher or administrator who did would you consider it not to be normal?

Keep in mind, you are the same guy that mocks me as a "stay at home mom" because I watch my kid during the day while working from home. Can you explain why "stay at home mom" to me is an insult?

That's not what he's doing. If it were there would be no need to change his name. He's induging the kid's fantasy that he's a girl. I have no issue with a boy wearing a dress. It seems you do.

No. My issue is with pretending a boy is a girl which often leads to drugging and mutilation. And we're just starting to see the unhappy results of those things.

You may think it's open minded to believe that only girls wear dresses and makeup. And whether you realize it or not that's something you're promoting.

I spent a long time choosing each of my children's names, both first and middle. The name is more than a fashion statement. The name is a gift and a declaration. The child is then claimed for Christ specifically by name at baptism. I would make sure my child was aware of this before taking the step.

I don't place that on everyone, although Union is a Catholic and chose a significant religious name for the child.

What's in a name. A rose by any other name...the truth is, etymology ends up being more profound than we realize

No, it is 100% not what I'm promoting. Wear a dress and be a straight man, wear a dress and be a gay man, wear a dress and be a transgender. I won't pigeonhole your gender.

But there are literally only two genders. This isn't like choosing a bucket of paint or 'YOU MAY SELECT TWO OPTIONS'.

You're born way or the other. That's it.

It is pretty much certain that the massive proliferation of sex change operations in the last ten years will be looked back on as barbaric. People will cite with awe the number of people who had their lives totally destroyed at the advice of medical professionals. It will be seen as no different than electro-shock therapy or lobotomies.

Hopefully someone takes this fun sig.

I'll go back to trying to understand the twisted logic behind your thought that "narrow minded" is "open" and "open minded" is "narrow".

You may think it's open minded to believe that only girls wear dresses and makeup. And whether you realize it or not that's something you're promoting.

You can pigeonhole whatever you want. Or not. I'm just not going to accept your arbitrary redefinition of what a boy is.

Wade's child is a boy. That's a scientific fact.
