How do you define "boy" then?
That's an interesting question. If I said the answer included something like "A girl wears dresses and a boy does not" would you agree? What if I said "A girl plays with baby dolls and a boy plays with trucks"? What if I said "A boy has short hair and a girl has long hair"?

I don't think any of those things have the slightest thing to do with the definitions of "boy" and "girl". You're pushing some very conservative ideas and pretending they're progressive.

Come on, Rick. You know very well what a boy is and what a girl is. Do we need to call in a scientist?

PittMike should be good, it is only 12:20 in the afternoon on the East Coast. :P

I have zero doubt that is true. As I said, we're beginning to see it already.

No. My issue is with pretending a boy is a girl which often leads to drugging and mutilation. And we're just starting to see the unhappy results of those things.

So the name change isn't the issue either. What is the issue with what Wade is letting his child do? As of now, it's all simply allowing his kid to behave in a way different that some people wouldn't expect. We have established that being a boy or a girl has nothing to do with any sort of behavior. Wade and his kid acknowledge what the genetics say about the kid.

I know we live in an era where the kids are seen as the nobility, but truthfully there is a good reason people have refused to indulge teenager's every whim for the entire preceding span of human history.

Let's get something straight. I don't give a shit about Wade's kid. Just don't ask me to pretend he's a girl.

As far as names are concerned, I wouldn't let my ten year old change the name I gave him. That's just me though. Do what you want. dolphin explained a little about names above. They aren't some trivial and arbitrary thing. The vast majority of us don't choose our own. And don't get me started on nicknames. They're almost always bestowed by someone else. You may like them or not, but you probably can't shake a good one. I've had various nicknames, Googie, Diesel, Beto, Orvy. I didn't choose any of them and some I liked more than others. But demanding your own name is sort of like wearing a wig. People are still going to see you as that dumb fucking bald guy. Now you're just wearing a hair hat. And you can demand to be called Frank, but a lot of guys are still gonna say Flapjacks.

Finally, if your kid comes to you and says he/she is the opposite sex, are you just going to say okay and purchase a new wardrobe and some puberty blockers?

I spent a long time choosing each of my children's names, both first and middle. The name is more than a fashion statement. The name is a gift and a declaration. The child is then claimed for Christ specifically by name at baptism. I would make sure my child was aware of this before taking the step.

I don't place that on everyone, although Union is a Catholic and chose a significant religious name for the child.

What's in a name. A rose by any other name...the truth is, etymology ends up being more profound than we realize

Those are not Gabrielle Union's kids.

I don't think Wade was asking you specifically. Do you have an issue with Wade accepting that his kid is a girl?

This question confuses me. Earlier, you argued that types of clothing worn had nothing to do with gender. So, why would it be an issue to have to purchase a new wardrobe? You believe, unlike my Conservative views, that wearing a dress is something that boys and girls can do interchangeably.

My stance on any sort of medical invention is that it should be done only once the person is an adult and can make their own decision. I wouldn't let my 13 year old get a tattoo either. Once they are old enough to make the decision as an adult then that is their choice.

I don't think I answered that one.

I think it's probably the end of women's sports if they can't come up with a good way to enforce it based on testing.

This is one of many issues with the whole topic with which I struggle.

If a person is going to prove to be trans in adulthood, it probably is better to have changed even before puberty.

As long as he makes no demands on me, no. I'm sure Dwyane Wade is wrong about a lot of things.

You know I put no stock in any religious aspect. But I am of the belief that parents are in charge of their children and not vice versa. Wade can allow his kid to do whatever he wants. And I can judge his actions as I choose. I'm not going to lose any sleep if the kid wants to shoot heroin and Wade lets him either.

Don't let it confuse you. Just answer it if you want to or don't. What will you do if your child insists he/she is the gender that you- as someone who isn't scientifically illiterate- knows he/she is not?

It would depend largely on the age but in general I would simply say it's a complex issue that may seem different to you as you get older.

I imagine a kid is more likely to reconsider than an adult. At 37 I'm grateful for all of the things I wanted to do to my body that I was told no about as a kid.

My stance on any sort of medical invention is that it should be done only once the person is an adult and can make their own decision. I wouldn't let my 13 year old get a tattoo either. Once they are old enough to make the decision as an adult then that is their choice.

This is one of many issues with the whole topic with which I struggle.

If a person is going to prove to be trans in adulthood, it probably is better to have changed even before puberty.

Why?

If you are going to identify as a woman it is better for you physically not to have developed as a man, including musculature, facial features, body and facial hair growth.
