Seriously. Your schedule and league is not broke, so why try to fix it? It's nearly perfect as is. These changes are silly.

how could you possibly be against 1 more regular season week and a 6 game wild card weekend? the only other tweak they need is to let the #1 seed pick their opponent in divisional round. but both of these proposed changes sound like good ideas to me

I think a team that goes 13-3 and has to play WC weekend is stupid. Granted, it would have been nice to have the Packers play an extra game and not get a Powder Puff opponent on their bye like this past season, but thats only a once in a while situation.

How is the league going to work the home and away schedules? One year 9 homes games, the next year 9 road games? Neutral site games? Silly.

Are they going to start the season at the same time? If so, that pushes the Super Bowl back to mid-Feb. The other option is to have NFL games played in late August and Labor Day weekend. Again, silly IMO.

Also, this potentially opens things up to more 8-8 or 7-9 teams making the playoffs. And eventually a 7-9 team will reach/win the Super Bowl.

I do like shortening the preseason. They could probably even go to two games in August.

Don Pompei, whom I find increasingly irritating, was all for the expanded playoffs, saying it'll bring in teams that may be 8-8 or 9-7 but are "playing their best ball at the end of the season." Whether you are for or against expanding the playoffs, that's just a brain-dead take. No distinction will be made between a team starting 1-4 or 4-1.

I can't get worked up over anything the NFL does. It's Vegas/WWF oriented anyway.

I like it.

Give a real reward to being the #1 seed. Let those slacker bastards that finished 2nd-7th fight for it.

meh, im not the biggest fan when an 11-5 team gets a bye. it happens both ways, the 2 seed still gets 2 home games.

a good question, havent seen the solution discussed

why would changing the start of the season be considered silly? less pre-season and more regular season is a win for fans

yes, one more fringe playoff team gets in. big deal. if an 8-8 team wins 3 road games to make the superbowl it wont be by fluke chance, they will have earned it

I think I'm going to be sick when Bridgewater signs somewhere for $30m per year, and Pace signs Mitch for $25m x 5 and calls it a bargain. The extra revenue owners and players will see are going to result in some dumb(er) contracts.

There is no real reason to do this other than simple greed.

If it gets rid of a pre-sason game....I'll live with it. I don't like fixing problems that don't exist. the NFL playoffs are not a problem.

This is placeholder for 8 team per league playoffs with no byes for the #1 or #2 seeds.

I don't hate this idea, but I don't really see why its necessary. It's just a bone for the players to agree to the 17 game season and one less preseason game.

This is a great change. Trading a preseason game for a regular season game is great.

I've never liked how easy the path is for the #2 seed in the playoffs. This at least makes them play a game. I don't think one extra playoff team per conference is a big deal.

Agreed. Rick ignored the playoff part of it.

To Doug's point, he's probably right but I hope it does not get to 8 teams per conference. One of the best things about the NFL and MLB playoffs is that they (generally) do not reward mediocrity with half the league making the playoffs like the NBA and NHL does. The latter's two playoffs take far too long to complete as well.

Hopefully the extra game means the season will start Labor Day weekend now.

The problem with the NFL playoffs now is that the #2 seed gets an easy path to the conference title game. Win a home game coming off a bye against a team who had to play the previous weekend and then have a 30% chance of hosting a game to go to the Super Bowl if the 1 seed is upset. This takes away that bye game at least though they still get the benefit of two home games.

The reason is declining attendance; presents fans with the motivation to stay interested in their teams. 8 teams per conference playoff in the NFL doesn't really extend the length of the postseason; have the #1 and #2 seeds play on Saturday, with the opportunity to play the following Sunday if they win (extra day of rest). 3 games on Saturday/Sunday each, 2 games on Monday with the winners of the Monday games playing on Sunday.

Yep.

It's not like this is stupid Rob Manfred ruining a great sport.

Giving me more of my favorite tv show in the fall/winter is a-ok.

What about when it goes to 16 or 18 playoff teams?

I'll accept being in the minority here. The NFL playoffs were nearly perfect as is, and I don't think there is any need to change them.

I'd like to see that pre season get trimmed even further. I don't see how owners could agree on three. Half the league loses out on that gate, even if it is a coerced purchase.

Two pre seasons.

What I'd really like to see is an NFL developmental system made out of an expanded taxi squad. Make them scrimmages on fields (not stadiums) with no attendance. 40 offensive plays and then switch sides. It is purely a tv sport. Scrimmage played, say, Wednesdays so the players are available for Sunday. This might also help the minority coaching problem.

Forget 17 games. 16 is fine.

I can live with 7 teams if you no longer respected conference. Make it 16 teams from the entire league. No byes. Playoffs would be a battle royal resulting in a worthy champ. My guess is you'd have no weak sisters like we see sometimes in the current format. 8 division winners, 8 from gen pop. Let's do this!

I like it.

Wild Card weekend will now have 3 games on Saturday, 3 games on Sunday.

That's awesome.

By then Illinois will have sports books at casinos. That would be a perfect time to go.

Why would having the Super Bowl in mid-February bother you? Hell, it’s one less week between the NFL and Spring Training.

I think they want the season to end later so I'm guessing the extra game gets tacked on at the end of the schedule. I heard someone say today that they want to push the Super Bowl back to the Sunday before President's Day to truly make it a three day weekend. This helps them get closer to that. That shortens the time between the SB, the combine, free agency, the draft, OTA's, reporting to camp, the pre-season, and then kick-off.

Year round sport. ltg is going to be pissed about all the extra out of town football talk during the NBA season. But that's what the NFL wants.
