The only thing North's visit proved is that Mac is light years ahead of him as a broadcaster. He kept giving North just enough rope for North to hang himself. Mac played it perfectly. North came across as a stuttering, mumbling less than honest J.O.

Just listened to the full interview and here are some comments and questions:

Dan, what is the truth about the breakup of the HFC. Were you seeking to get rid of Terry in 1999?

Am I correct in assuming that you could not finish that interview quickly enough for your liking?

You may say it publicly, but you and North are not friends. There is some deep seeded hostility between you two. It is obviously unresolved because it bubbles up very quickly whenever his name is mentioned. I would say that you have reached de tente (just as long as you don't reach da taint) but you are not friends.

Mike mentioned that the idea to switch to general topics' was his. In an interview with the sun times in 06 or 07 Mike could not stop himself from blaming management for pushing him into general topics. He acknowleged its failure and pledged to return to the station's roots.

When Mike mentioned his ability to keep up with the times the names Tony Orlando, Nancy Sinatra and Connie Francis should have been referenced. Each of these stars of the 60's has appeared on Mike's show. I cannot name a musical performer who's greatest fame occured over the last 20 years ever appearing on his show.

It was a good interview for being an informal meeting between old coworkers. The intent was not really to grill him. If that was the intent, I would have expected many more follow up questions. It would not have been appropriate in this forum.

Unlike others, I would love to hear you and Mike on the air again but not necessarily in an interview. I would love to hear simply a walk down memory lane for some time for 4 hours. There were plenty of good times that were a part of my life and I would enjoy hearing about them.

If Mike would be willing to do it, I would recommend MJH take their vacations at the same time and let Mike sit in as a guest host.

He did. Mac actually did things that were more destructive than I anticipated. E.g.:

1. Bringing up chronic losses to Mike & Mike.
2. Plugging Mike & Mike
3. "They have BILLBOARDS!"
4. Senn reference which was a simultaneously served upper cut and a knee in the crotch. Failed attempt to name the field after him and the tough street mention. Granted, I have no idea what the neighborhood was like when Mike roamed these streets, today's Senn HS neighborhood looks rather pristine.
5. Harry going from professional and inquisitive (friendship with Mac question) to down right patronizing and condescending (how many dogs have you saved.)

One thing I didn't understand:

When Pappy said that Fred has received five bonus checks... Mac chimed in with "ProFlowers.com" - and then they moved on....

?????

That was a really stupid thing for North to say. I don't know what Fred's bonus checks could have to do with ratings, I guess nothing as he just implied they were related. Also, who talks about co workers pay in public like that? I thought that was shady.
And.... jurco.

You must have grown up in the projects if you would classify the neighborhood surrounding Senn as pristine.

Dr. Ken wouldn't house his servants in those quarters.

Heard it on podcast and Mike came out bad and some of you guys are right, Mac played it well. He had to know North would hang himself and his ego would be out of control. And that's what happened.

Seriously, in any profession, who could deal with someone like this at their workplace?

Yeah, because Mike North is the ONLY guy in the world of radio with an ego.

The switch to general topics was this boards' idea. Specifically, I was discussing that as a way to get Gary Meier/Roe Conn over to morning drive-in, and they could do general topics. Conn signs his deal; Meier goes off in his own direction (for reasons I don't know) and lo and behold! Someone has the idea of doing general topics, except using North in that role...

What a shocker! And of course, North finds Annie to offer counterpoint, and tries to bring Buffone as the sports update guy (but settles for Fred.) Not that, at any time, I thought this would work for North; he's fairly limited to sportstalk.

Interestingly, if someone wanted that, and wanted to use in-house talent, they had Dave Baum who has done general topics as well as sports.

I think it is safe to say that anyone who professes that Mac is jealous of North is a complete moron. If it's is all about the money, then yeah, Mac could be jealous.

Since when had Mac given the vibe that what he does is all about the money? Mac has the best sports talk show in the city of Chicago, and I think he is pretty damn proud of that.

Danny Mac may say that "North was the bread and butter of the Score" back in the early days, and he may or may not truly believe that. We will never know. However, Mike North's good days were limited, and are far far behind him. Mac has had success on two completely different shows, which is something not a whole lot of people in radio accomplish. North had a great run with one person. Afterwards, it's not like North went from great to average... he went from great or good to very very awful.

And even if it was about the money, wasn't it WSCR that badly wanted Mac to come back to the station when his last contract with ESPN 1000 was nearing an end? And isn't it WSCR which is going to want Danny Mac once again when his next deal is up? On the other end, nobody wants North.

If it's about the money, sure, Mac could be jealous. But I think Mac has shown to be above that, and truly takes pride into his job and accomplishments. When you consider the accomplishments of Mac vs. North, and what the each of them has to offer, you've got to favor Dan McNeil by leaps and bounds. All this "Mac is jealous of North" shit is useless clutter and I suggest that those who sincerely believe that either hold some strange loyalty to North for whatever reason, or have a personal vendetta vs. Mac.

Case closed.

I got to say I have more respect for Mac. Mac should have shot back when North went after him for breaking his contract w/ the score.

At least Mac Never went on another radio show and bitched about being let go. He didn't burn his bridges like North is doing.

He really did break a contract, and he went on WLUP and took shots at his former bosses.

You can't bitch about being "let go" when you break a contract and force a station to let you go.
