NBA regular season in a rout. Currently drowning out all NFL talk on ESPN and elsewhere.

 Wait you mean an entire league taking the unprecedented move of shutting their season down due to an infectious disease is getting more coverage than a 45 yr player in a different sport free agency ? Scorching hot take there ltg.

Nah Rogue. It was repeatedly stated by the esteemed intelligentsia of this board that the NFL would always garner more interest than the NBA.

"NFL OffSeason>NBA Regular Season"

"NFL interest will always trump NBA interest"

Ok now we can put that silly ass notion to the test.

This is actually the perfect storm for that. This was specifically the period that i discussed a year or 2 ago.

Now there will be confirmation for that.

It’s Coronavirus interest more than NBA interest. If Tom Brady went on a killing spree and there was wall to wall coverage of it, we wouldn’t say it was because people loved the NFL, it’d be because there was a killing spree.

I like both but lean NBA. Even I can admit that if you polled every single sports fan in America more people would express interest in Brady's story over the NBA cancellation if given those two options.

In season NBA finally has a story that trumps out of season NFL, and it takes the NBA shutting down their entire league to move the meters

Also, as weird as it sounds, I don't think the NBA shutting down play qualifies as "regular season NBA talk" as the term was used in the original argument.

Like I said it’s more of a Coronavirus story. It’s such a bad troll post even Nas would be embarrassed by it. I’m sure the NBA is thrilled that the only way for themselves to get top billing on Sportscenter is to stop playing.

Yep. NBA teams playing in empty stadiums was also a bigger story.

NBA always has top billing this time of year. Only the dinosaurs such as Dan McNeil think otherwise. By the way how is that section of his doing these days? Awfully light.

Nah I was told countless times over the past two years that no matter what the NFL would always receive more interest than the NBA. And you know what Billypootons? I never advanced the extremely relevant point that the NBA murders the NFL on social media. Its not even close. NBA garners much more interest than the NFL when it comes to cyberspace.

Only a deranged person like ltg or July could make these issues about themselves. Truly sad individuals.

In an off-season marked by big moves by some of its biggest stars, the NBA is flexing its marketing muscles and showing why it continues to outperform all other sports leagues when it comes to social media.

According to a recent report from MVPindex, the NBA grew the value of its social media footprint by a whopping 132 percent year over year (YoY), despite a drop in domestic ratings and impressive inroads into the Chinese and European markets. The league generated a total social value of more than $13.7 billion and created a record $1.1 billion in value for its brand partners, compared with the second-place NFL creating $343 million in value for its brand partners during the same timeframe.

By any measure, these numbers demonstrate incredible value and growth for the NBA and its sponsors, even at a time when their traditional broadcast viewership dipped in 2018-19 by 4% overall and 5% for national games across ABC, ESPN, TNT and NBA TV. Behind this success is a deliberate focus on social media as a value generator, and a consistent and disciplined social media strategy that others would do well to emulate.

How do they do it? First and foremost, they simply post more content—132,000 times more to be exact. However, real social media value does not simply come from the quantity of posts, but the quality of their content. How effective is the content in driving engagement? Do fans like, comment and share the content or simply scroll by it?

The NBA is really popular...On Twitter. That's cool. Remember when the NFL Draft trounced basketball playoff ratings? Which makes more money for a league: Being popular with TV audiences or being popular On Twitter?

I think the NBA is well run, their decision to use social media heavily was wise. Now to figure out how to maximize profit from it. Streaming is the future not cable tv.

And the NFL Off season is Really really popular .... during the first day of the NFL draft. Which demonstrates more of an accurate rating? one day out of a 6 month offseason or revenue generated by Social Media?

Don't really need an answer now do you?

Yep. Cuban actually talked about this on one of the podcasts recently. They are making a mint on it currently. It will only grow as theirs is a younger audience more prone to use Social Media.

This is true, and the NFL is woefully behind even MLB in terms of taking money from fans who want to watch out-of-market games. The fact that Sunday Ticket is STILL a DirecTV exclusive is unfathomable from an organization that can figure out how to print money like the NFL.

However, I contend that when they finally do offer ST as a standalone service, fans that don't have the means to purchase streaming packages from both the NFL and NBA will choose the NFL.

I wonder if a streaming service or some company out there will end up parterning and offering all four major sports. NFL, MLB, NHL, and if you want it, I guess NBA too for one price. Like $500 all games for all leagues from Jan 1- Dec 31.
