Which other fundamental rights are eligible for suspension? Can they refuse a speedy trial because a judge can be exposed to someone on trial who has been exposed to thousands in jail? Can we suspend the election because changing leadership during a emergency is a bad idea? Worked for caesar (for a while).

Speedy trial rights have been tolled for quite some time. Just ask the folks that have been in jail for the past 2 or 3 years awaiting trial.

Don't see you starting alarmist threads about that for some reason.........

How often does this happen? Alarmist threads? The heck does that mean?

People's rights are trampled on every day. Those accused of crimes but not convicted have their rights stripped from them for years at a time. I haven't seen you start one thread about that.

It happens all the time. Primarily because excessive bonds are given in cases the state can't win. Can't lose them either if you delay trial for years until the person accepts a plea deal. Now the state/county has reduced the bonds. BRogue doesn't like that.

It does? For what kind of offenses? Where? Mainly cook?

Yes. Where have you been? Every type of offense. I imagine that it happens to poor people and minorities all across the country. Definitely in CC.

If JB wants to declare martial law over the flu he should do that. We'll see how that goes over with the electorate.

Does one lose the right to complain about something if they haven't complained about everything?
If I became aware of a specific rights violation I'm sure I would have discussed it. I'm not shy.

Why don't you come out and say what you're really trying to say.

That kind of thing should certainly get more attention. I'd like to hear more about it. Is there a "famous case recently I ahould look up?

Guilty or not most people take a plea. Then you have Kalief Browder who spends over 3 years in jail for allegedly stealing a backpack and he refuses to take a plea despite the vicious beatings and sexual assaults. He spent 2 of those years in solitary confinement in Rikers before the DA finally dropped his case. Years later he committed suicide.

Here's a decent primer https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vox.co ... liver-bail

Read it. This conversation wasn't about bail, however. Interesting article. I'm not sure what the authors alternative plan is however.

Back to the original conversation, though... this is a fascinating test of what Americans will tolerate when it comes to the government trampling on the rights of innocent people. Can the government get away with declaring an emergency and suspension of rights over a couple thousand people with the flu? I hope not. But if so... what else could be an emergency?

No! Everyone accused of a crime is guilty. If they aren't guilty then why were they charged with committing a crime in the first place?

You haven't even tested whether or not this right will be trampled on and are upset. Meanwhile MANY people's speedy trial rights actually are trampled on every day and you care not. Why is that?

Interesting story. That's terrible. Clearly bullshit. The people not ready. The people not ready. The people not ready. That DA should be in jail.

I'm not upset. I'm asking a question.
I have a specific question for you. Am I not allowed to ask if something is illegal if I didn't complain about an unrelated rights violation? Would I be required to complain about every rights violation before I can discuss one that happened a few hours ago? That seems unreasonable. I'm going to assume this is trolling. If you would like to address the topic as originally posted we can. If you'd like to discuss your unrelated issue, start a thread about it and I'll discuss it with you.

Patriot Act

Truthfully, we're a bunch of pussies who are afraid of our own shadow. We need the illusion of safety despite all of our tough talk. Because if something slightly throws our day off, we'll have a panic attack and BEG the government to come in and save us.

My friend I've been bitching about the patriot act since it was passed. Truly.

No it's fair to complain about this. It's just as fair for me to question why you are more interested in this right (which hasn't been infringed upon yet) over others, which are infringed upon every single day.

The 4th amendment has been gutted and very few said a word because it was done in the name of "public safety". A magazine restriction is seen as trampling the 2nd amendment and will be fought to the death.

Well neither is really what i was asking about the legality of in this thread. This was literally in the news in the last few hours. It's rare you see the governor of a state bragging about busting up lawful gatherings. Thought it might be worth discussing. I was unaware of the prerequisite complaining SS mentioned.

Although you're clearly trolling, the answer is any violation of constitutional rights is a problem.

Are people being put in jail for expressing their right to free assembly? Let's test the theory. Is it potentially chilling free speech? Yeah, probably. Is there a logical reason that crow sizes are being limited? Yeah,

Seems an arbitrary number doesn't it? I mean, theres probably that many people in a cheesecake factory or at pinstripes on a weekend. Is that ok? Is pritzker actually talking about shutting down being alleys and large chain restaurants?

CHICAGO — Illinois now has 32 cases of COVID-19, including a young child in Chicago, officials announced Thursday.

Quote:
All events that are estimated to have 250 or more, private or public, should be canceled or postponed until May 1, Gov. JB Pritzker announced in a said.

The governor mandated that all events of 1,000 or more are canceled immediately. Pritzker said officials will use force to break up any events in the state over 1,000 people.

Sounds like a suspension of the 1st amendment. Can this be legal?

But everybody should go to high school? What....

Oh for the record it's not really a free speech concern. It was more about assembly.
