Why didn’t Canada have a housing crisis?

There are vast cultural differences. Americans over consume everything and that includes medical services. Government and consumers spend beyond their means. We have a litigious society. Canada is also significantly poorer on average with per capita GDP of $46,000 vs $63,000 for the U.S. Many of these same dynamics apply in European Countries vs us.

So if everyone hates this place and wants to be like Norway, keep in mind, we’d generally be poorer.

My point, is there are things we are really good at and plenty of things we have to get better at. Healthcare is probably at the top of the list of fixes. Primary education is right there as well.

If we took away the outliers like billionaires in both countries how much of a difference do you think yearly income would be? I think that unrealistic, relatively unattainable wealth skews that data. Especially when one country has 600+ more billionaires than the other.

This is gross.

https://ceoworld.biz/2019/05/13/ranked-countries-with-the-most-billionaires-2019/

Most billionaires by country

1. United States 705
2. China 285

14. Canada 45

We’re talking about higher median incomes and average per person GDP. Both are much higher in the U.S. By definition, median drops off the billionaires. With 325 million people, 700 billionaires don’t really impact the average GPD.

Every other country in the world would take our position over theirs. We have 4% of the world population and like 20% of the world’s economic output. The strongest and most well known global companies are American. We have a large technological lead. We have the best universities. We have among the lowest unemployment, consistently. For all our problems, we are best positioned overall.

Plus we have the best message board posters.

So these globally known American companies, where are their products manufactured predominantly?

If you’re talking Cat, Boeing, defense, Hollywood and food companies, here or markets where they are selling product. If it’s other manufacturing companies, they are made in China and Mexico. But so many of our companies are service related like Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc. Those very high paying jobs are mostly domestic. And even Apple, the high value jobs are all here.

If you want the Chinese market position, then your incomes levels are about a fourth of ours. Their jobs are low wage factory work.

I think the point I’m getting at is the issue of income inequality, and how it really exploded when manufacturing started to be outsourced.

The rich got wealthy, and it seems half the country is still spinning their hamster wheels.

Singapore is an excellent example of good public administration. They have very high standards for their civil service, and in turn, government jobs are high paying. There are many things to be gleaned about the way their administer services.

Top 10 companies by revenue. My guess as to where the “products” come from. Note that MANY of our large corporations products are software or services, which aren’t “manufactured” in the traditional sense.

Walmart—China
Exxon Mobil—manufactured by God/the earth. Tapped into globally
Apple—Hardware, China. Software, US
Berkshire—diversified, global
Amazon— software company, US
United health—services company, US
McKesson—not sure, Global

they're all white, middle class, and have like three cities in the entire country.

So the more brown people we add the worse it gets?

That’s the type of response I’d expect from someone who idolizes living in the most segregated metropolitan area in the country.

I think he was clearly joking. Canada has lots of poverty in cities and especially in the Maritimes, it's just not talked about much in America because we don't give a shit about Canada's business, they only have to care about ours.

Jbi, are you saving money? Are you building wealth? This goes back to a cultural problem when you start talking wealth and debt. Americans generally spend every dollar their earn and borrow as much as they can. So yes if you look at wealth, the bottom part of this country are getting killed.

We don’t have an income problem as we have among the highest median income in the developed world. We have a massive savings problem. Even families with six figure incomes are living paycheck to paycheck. We over consume.

I’m not getting your point. I don’t think we “exploit” countries. Products are manufactured globally, and all companies (US and foreign) take advantage of that. Each country has their own standards for pay, worker safety, etc. The only way to balance that are “evil” tariffs.

I think 70% of our economy is “services,” so no manufacturing whatsoever.

You’re an oil guy. Not sure how you can exploit an oil field?

Unlike America, the rest of the world doesn't have an industry built around incarcerating a significant number of their citizens. Why can't America be as great as Singapore? We'll never know.

Yes, but like every oilfield worker my first few years here were spent paying off debt, buying a new vehicle, and loaning money to siblings. Everything is much more stable and enjoyable now for me savings wise.

Agreed there is a spending problem, but there is also a student loan and medical debt problem. God forbid you get cancer a couple years after you finish your masters.

Maybe wages need to increase, but how do you increase wages without destroying small to medium businesses?

Yes no doubt. In response to that criticism, they have been expanding their American made product offerings, but it is sickening. I never go to Wal Mart, but it’s not like Target is any better.

ATT—US
AmerisourceBergen—global

But we want to be Canada or China.....lol. We have 4% of the world’s population. Maybe we should be Denmark. I bet we could better exploit Greenland.

It was sarcasm.

I messed up. I thought Jbills posted that, not you. denis is clearly a capitalist that I’m aligned with.

My mistake.

I never go to Wal Mart, but it’s not like Target is any better.

Wal-Mart is like a 3rd world country. At least when I buy my chinese goods at Target I'm not surrounded by the unwashed masses.

So these globally known American companies, where are their products manufactured predominantly?

Top 10 companies by revenue. My guess as to where the “products” come from. Note that MANY of our large corporations products are software or services, which aren’t “manufactured” in the traditional sense.

Walmart—China
Exxon Mobil—manufactured by God/the earth. Tapped into globally
Apple—Hardware, China. Software, US
Berkshire—diversified, global
Amazon— software company, US
United health—services company, US
McKesson—not sure, Global
CVS—global
ATT—US
AmerisourceBergen—global

It is easier for you to say these things from where you sit financially.

For sure, you’re right. It’s actually easier for me because of where I came from and how I got to where I am at now. I see how well our system can work.
