Did you miss this?

-The government, which produces no resources, offered roughly 11,000 people "free" lunch for 3+ weeks to people who don't really need it in a time of no crisis. They should have enough food for people who really really need it. They aren't Oprah and this isn't a big give away. They should be involved in our lives as little as possible whether that's good, bad, or indifferent. This should have been sent to the people eligible in the school system and necessary arrangements made.-

I think around 10% of our district in in free and reduced lunch programs. They are offering food to about 9,900 people that probably don't need it and/or don't qualify for it. If it costs 1.50 That's almost $15,000 a day for no reason, stores aren't shut down. How are they going to estimate? Supply? Prevent waste? Prevent shortage?

These meals are cereal, granola bars, juice and a piece of fruit. Outside of the fruit most of it can be stored for weeks or months. They are not going to be throwing out 10k in meals a day.

That's not the point. They shouldn't be offered to people who do not need them in a non crisis situation. Our lunches are a sandwich, a vegetable, a fruit, and a milk usually.

Run for school board. This should be your main platform.

No. One of my kids isn't even enrolled in district and one will only be for a few more years probably but they can still get free lunch til 18. You cut me the check. Pay for this or the increase in my taxes. It's no big deal, right? Just do it. The government will take care of us. They'll do right.

Spaulding: people will volunteer their time and money to help the less fortunate.

Also Spaudling: people will immediately take advantage of an emergency school lunch program.

I think I heard that you could basically go to any school and grab a lunch for your children. Didnt matter in district or out. Seemed like a nice gesture.

Right?! I already told all my single friends and friends without kids.

They're all going to show up early and pilfer all they can.

How will a school pay for potentially 100 million lunches? Do you know how much that is going to cost?

I little faith in government as it is currently structured. You have very little faith in people's ability to police themselves.

The government should not be volunteering almost 10000 more lunches per day than it normally provides under non emergency conditions.

So. I now have the option and right to demand my kids get a free lunch even if it could be at the expense of some kid who needs it. So do thousands of other people. Even the 0 year olds.

You don't have the option to demand a free lunch for your kids...but you do have the option to accept a free lunch for them.

Our country has $billions in program money out there. How much goes to corporations that don't "need" it?

This is a pretty ridiculous hill to take a stand on.

Did the district order a whole bunch of extra food to hand out because of the closure, or are they simply distributing the food they would have distributed if school were still in session?

This is utterly ridiculous.

MANY families who wouldn't typically need the assistance, suddenly had the rug pulled out from under them...now they do need...or will need very soon.

I'm against corporations getting kickbacks, unfair tax breaks, using loopholes or whatever too.

I'm not on board with the government wasting money in any way shape or form. Just because you deem something not important enough doesn't mean anybody else has to. It's not their place to be doing this. If you really blew 300k on a boat I could see why you think all this is going to end up being pocket change. When they up the budget next year and I'm paying more in taxes do I just send you and Stairs the difference to split?

No most of the kids don't eat what they are given. They don't like ham or turkey or cheese or carrots or celery or cucumbers. They eat the fruit usually. Veg always goes into the garbage.

If you could wave a wand and have it done your way, where this was only provided for those who can prove need, it wouldn't eradicate waste and fraud, and it might carry the unintended consquence of depriving people who are too invested in their social status to partake in such a program.

Yes. There is a point in wanting to know how to assess supply and demand. What if all 11000 kids need it? What if only the 1000 or so that usually need it are still the only ones? If this is how they are going to distribute food then come out and say that and figure what needs to be done. I don't think you just let them take over.

Proving it seems like the key take away here. Spaulding needs people on their knees before they can collect their free fruit cup.

I've spent enough time in the western suburbs to see people with Escalades get their lights shut off.

And furious with the government for shutting down business. You guys are all like yeah shut em down and have the government give you crumbs. We'll be taken care of. Hard times but they'll save us from all the problems THEY FUCKING CAUSED. WTF?

That was my cousin. She makes really poor financial decisions that she is rarely held accountable for. She had a Lexus though not an Escalade.

What do you believe the school is doing with the food they would have served kids if school wasn't canceled?
