I'm not a reporter by trade, but I try my best to make fans aware of things, not to mention offer my opinions. Right out of high school, I actually spent an entire summer at Roosevelt University's Journalism Program, where I learned a great deal about the business, took part in an actual Mayor Daley Press Conference, plus met former NBC 5 reporter Ray Suarez, not to be confused with the 31st Ward Alderman. I'm probably going off topic in this forum, but my idols happen to be broadcasters and writers who make the kind of cash I'll likely never see in my lifetime considering the corporate cutbacks and that those in charge seem to want those who come from places like Des Moines, IA, Rockford, Pittsburgh, Charlotte & Louisville and will work in Chicago for a bargain basement salary.

You really want to bring up a rookie and get his feet wet by trying to get the last 3 outs of a game?

That sounds like a recipe for disaster IMO.

Why is this? Since when is it the job of a closer to pick guys off? I thought the role of a closer was to save the game?

I know it worked in 05, but my point is that it is not a real wise move. Just because something worked out well one time does not make it a smart move.

The only way I would even think about doing it is if Jenks is done for good and you are looking at needed a permanent closer. But you better be real sure he is the guy and he is ready.

Twins got swept by the Red Sox today. We can go up 3.5 tonight. Bannister goes for the Royals. Sox have killed him.

Anyone else notice that it looked like OC was almost in a shoving match with someone in the dugout? Someone get on him for stealing third? Guy seems to be a square peg in a round hole.

Carlos Quentin has a pair of 2-run homers, and just scored the go-ahead run in the 8th on a balk. He has scored 3 of the Sox 7 runs in another ugly ballgame in Kansas City, which has somehow gotten Javier Vazquez off the hook after allowing 6 runs in a lousy start!

On another note, nice DP. Who works the 9th if they get out of this?

Looks like Dotel. Not my first choice, but it's worth a shot.

Why not leave Thorton in there?

I'd give Thornton a shot too, but my first choice at an "alternate" closer would be Massett. Just because we already have designated 7th and 8th inning guys. But that's why I'm not a manager.

In the wake of the Linebrink high wire act, it is Dotel hoping to get the save for Adam Russell tonight...

Dotel gets it done, 1-2-3 and the Sox just won an ugly 7-6 game to build the lead in the A.L. Central lead to 3.5 games over Minnesota.

Nick Masset was NOT available tonight due to the 13 inning marathon, but Adam Russell is 3-0 in relief with Dotel saving it in the 9th in an ugly 7-6 win tonight, giftwrapped by a balk in the 8th by the Royals' bullpen.

Masset is not closer material. C'mon

It's either Dotel, Thornton or Linebrink.

I'll take Dotel. But Ozzie can go with his gut.

After todays performance - striking out the side - I guarentee you that Dotel will get the next save chance.

It's only for 4 more games. Jenks will be back after the all-star break.

Right, I'm just saying for future use (while Jenks is on the DL). I'd prefer to keep the "bullpen lineup" as close to the same as it was. Linebrink and Dotel pitch 7 and 8 with Thornton and the main alternate and Logan is the lefty "specialist. With what's left over, I'd take Massett and see what happens. But I certainly can't argue with tonight's decision at all.

Absolutely right. It was just an idea. Like I said, just to keep as much of the "lineup" as-is.

I tend to think Octavio will get another shot to potentially save his second game as soon as tomorrow night, and I won't be shocked if Matt Thornton closes one of the 100 degree sweatboxes this weekend in Arlington, TX before the All-Star break...

The trouble the Sox are having with this sad sack of monkey crap, that is the K.C. Royals team, reminds me of Ace Ventura-when Jim Carrey is fighting it out with Lt. Lois Einhorn (Sean Young) and Dan Marino looks over and asks " Having a little trouble with the Lady Ace?"

I would have went with Dotel in the first place based on his experience closing. Linebrink had 5 total saves in his career versus 80+ for Dotel.

What REALLY needs to happen is that Kenny needs to go get another arm in the pen. If Jenks goes down again or struggles to return to form, you need another effective arm in the bullpen. Even if Dotel is lights out in the closer role, you are still down an arm.

True, but they are winning the games even if it has been a struggle.

Williams definitely needs to get another arm for the pen. With Jenks having some injury issues. Dotel being so unpredictable and Linebrink showing some signs of slowing down.

steve the Cub have taken extra innings to beat the Pirates more than once this season. As bad as the Royals are, they still win 40% of thier games.

That sad sack of monkey crap that is the K.C. Royals team went 13-5 against the National League, including taking a series from the Diamondbacks and taking the season series from the second place St. Louis Cardinals.

I've missed most of your recent posts Steve, but what does that say about the NL and the NL Central?
