How is it going at your house so far if you have kids?

We started it today and though the work technically doesn't count I have had more turn it in than I expected in first hour. Which is good.

Going well.

Son's teacher ignored the packets from CPS and is assigning daily work through Google Classroom, so he's happy. Daughter has a packet of work that she enjoys doing every day.

Trying to keep to their same schedules.

We are using Google classroom and one day will be Khan Academy work.

My youngest did a few assignments in the afternoon and will do some this afternoon and evening. It's a good way to get him away from his stupid video games, and it seems to be at least somewhat effective in drilling math skills and possibly vocab.

His non-computerized work is a pain for me, since I have to read the texts with him. Apparently, this is real homework; the assignments connected to the reading will be graded, despite the policy that says it should not be.

What do you think DG is doing with the food they were going to serve but can't because classes are cancelled?

Storing most of it for later and probably throwing the fruit out.

That is not allowed if it is a public school. Thank Pritzker for that.

So if nothing is graded, how do they know who to pass and who to fail? Or are we just doing social promotion this year and hoping for the best?

So I guess 71% of school districts said they would have issues with having the capability of getting all students online. So these days are deemed "Act of God" days and will not be made up in June. Every year is social promotion. You can not hold kids back for failing until high school. This year with less testing and school days.

High school has been excellent. Full class days and pretty seamless.

Grade schools have not been as good. Not horrible but it isn't school

Nothing is supposed to count just for the "Act of God" days...at least that is my understanding from my admin. We are using these days for staff who are not quite adept at Google Classroom to get set up and going. We will also be using these days as well to determine who does not have internet availability. So far I have a decent amount of students getting the review assignment or open ended prompt I've assigned completed.

I don't disagree, but some programs such as Pearson do allow for unlimited practice and examples (or so my math colleagues have informed me). Again this isn't ideal, and I hope we get back in the classroom as soon as possible.

what you should notice is how much of a waste of time 7 hour schools days are. When your kids are finishing their work in a handful of hours it should leave you scratching your head.

From talking with many IT directors around the country in the K12 environment they were tasked with putting together a Distance Learning plan in mere days as opposed to the months it should really take.

Some estimate only about 50% adoption. Especially in poorer areas. Some schools are not fully 1:1 and don't have devices to send home so that copying machines are working overtime.

It will be interesting to see what emerges in the aftermath of this.

My wife is a administrator of a local homeschool group/chapter. She said they've been getting a ton of inquiry into their methods. They utilize zoom for conference classes and utilize google classroom a bit.

oh and there is math software out that is effectively a digital teacher. my 13 yr old who is doing geometry and 14 yr old in algebra do it with software that effectively got them to this point. there is help from their mother and I on some stuff but its really minimal.

Chet, I misspoke. Many of the computer programs do assess you (or you can't move on until your get the current answer correct). However, the grade portion for school is on completion at a 90% or better.

The actual homework is graded and goes into your report card. So, though it is limited what you can learn online, it's all around a good system as a support. Not a replacement, but, for some skills, not bad.

Social promotion is where quality goes to suffer torture and die.

1) You sound liberal
2) Khan Academy can really help with this.
3) You are right about emails back and forth. That only works when you have two people who are really smart and incredibly engaged with the material--and motivated to improve. And that's discriminatory right here against people from Indiana and Missouri.

I could give 90 minutes of math work. However it is not graded and they haven't learned it yet. So what would be the point?

You are also eliminating passing periods, lunch, a few specials such as P.E. (assuming as a local district is having parents certify some activity was done), and time to answer those questions Rogue was asking about (at least in math). By having student's email questions, turn in work electronically, there is less down time/distractions etc... Again...this is NOT ideal, but just a response to the situation at hand.

We have been closed thru Apr 3rd. Supposed to be getting word on virtual learning opportunities this afternoon. I cannot wait to see what that entails since like 60% of our district does not have internet at home. If they think people are doing packets of worksheets during this time they are full of shit.

I think it's trending that most schools K-12 will be online the rest of the year. 90% sure at this point.

With the cancelling of high school, how are they going to deal with seniors in school and their plans for college along with the colleges that will have them in their classes potentially in Sept?

The hardest part as a senior to me would be picking a college that I may not even get a chance to visit.
