Is it though? How many people do you know who are sick to the point of requiring hospitalization? I'll ask that of everyone here. Personally, I don't know a single one.

Someone I knew lived near/knew the woman who died.

Down in Georgia my wife’s company had a case at corporate in Atlanta and now a second case in the plant 100 miles away. Neither employee traveled to the other site. Seems a bit unlucky that 2 of Georgia’s 150 cases happened at the same company 100 miles away.

Or it’s spreading everywhere here and no one can be tested. Total employees for the company is about 20k

I've read that it could have been in the U.S. since November or perhaps even earlier. I didn't really think much of it until now but in December I had a really bad cold that caused my lungs to make noises like I had never experienced before. I'm not saying I had COVID-19, but I think it's a possibility.

A few weeks ago while we were arguing about Trump, I was dealing with the flu for the first time in at least a decade. I couldn't talk for a couple of days. Maybe it was the flu or maybe it was the coronavirus. My youngest son goes to daycare with a lot of Asian kids and he fought a cold/flu for like 2 weeks. It hit the daycare so hard that they had to send MANY kids home. Maybe that was the coronavirus too. Who knows?

I’ve had a terrible cough for two weeks since returning from NY. I never missed a day of work from illness until two weeks ago. But I never had a fever or any other symptoms. My cough is finally better. Just strange in that I have never had coughing issues before (never smoked either).

An Asian parent had the coronavirus and the daycare is being shut down for 2 weeks.

My brother-in-law had a bad respiratory infection in late January that knocked him on his ass, and he'd had his flu shot. He may have had it.

My understanding is a virus actually makes changes to your dna. Anyone read something saying it’s testable once one is recovered. It seems like they should be able to confirm that.

It was startling when I physically was at my worst, every M.D. I saw repeatedly asked if I smoked as if I wasn't going to tell the truth. It has to be the biggest factor in people hit hardest by this virus. Especially in China, Europe & Iran where so many more people still heavily smoke.

No idea if true, but if so, I'm surprised we haven't seen a CNN headline "Coronavirus changes DNA!!!!!"

That is the problem with a viral vaccine. There is something with a virus infecting the body through injecting RNA into the hosts genetic material.

I don’t think we have successfully completed a viral vaccine.

White House said today 7% of tests are currently coming back negative. This tells you the odds of having it months ago are pretty damn slim.

It'll get to 18k later this week. Right at 19k +/- now.

We almost cut it in half in 2 weeks because we believe that we may be able to save a handful of 70+ year old people with failing health.

I forget what I read. I’m wrong we have many viral vaccines, but there is something related to this strain that is exceptionally difficult to control. I’ll try to find the article about it.

It's hard to work, be devastated by the market losses in my 401k and worry about the virus all at the same time. If I think about it all it is pretty devastating.

I have some fears about the business.

There are major corporations that were previously strong and profitable whose market values are now pricing in bankruptcy risk. It’s hard to believe that an infectious disease with such a low kill rate could cause everything to seize up this way. The system shouldn’t be this fragile.

Is now a good time to cut you losses and temporarily get out?

That’s up to each individual. I am always honest with the board about how I play the market. I am 100% comfortable with my investment strategies. I have significant liquidity and all my investments are appropriate for the time horizons. Selling now is probably selling low. But in a week it might have been the right call. The problem when you time is how do you know when to get back in.

If the money you have invested is for some long term goal like retirement, then there is no reason to sell here.

The only thing that keeps me from buying is the same fear we all have, how bad is this going to get? In times like these cash is more precious than the opportunity to make a huge return in 12 months.

I am fearful now mostly because I see all the jobs losses coming. Most folks don’t have several years of money laying around like me, so I worry for many of my fellow Americans.

Only if you need the cash. Property owners also will be taking a bath. Business taking a bath. There is literally no good investments.

50/50 chance of losing my job. Life savings and college fund cut in half at best. At least my mortgage payment is manageable. Lot of stress.

No, I don't "need" anything. I don't have a mortgage. Just tuition and normal housing expenses. I'm not worried about that.

I got into the housing market as an investor around 2008. I had somewhat been in the industry for a while and thought I understood enough and knew what the floor was. I got my ass handed to me. The floor was twice as deep as I expected. I don't want to make that same mistake. After taking a 50% loss, you need a 100% gain just to break even. How long is that going to take? Months? Years?

Back in the tech bubble I got sucked into the greed of easy money and had my portfolio collapse to 32k. All the years of saving and dollar cost averaging all gone. I moved all remaining money left to broadly based index funds. I increased my 401k to 30% contribution, and fully funded my IRAs. I increased my savings and spent less. In took 9 years to get close to what I had then went to all cash in August 2008. Got back in about 2012. Never went over 35-40 stocks. Told myself I'd never sell at a bottom even if it meant sleepless nights, or be in stocks at a bottom for that matter again, or make greed or fear dictate my thought process or actions. Now went to all cash on a gut feeling when the S & P got near double digits off it's all time high. Wish I got out earlier. But still way better shape than the 2018 4th qtr. China tariff correction. So much of 2019 profits still intact. S & P 30% off high looking like it'll hit 50% unless some unbelievably positive news breaks which I hope does, but doubt.

I have a 401k chunk that has just been sitting in an aggressive fund since like 2004. It's back down to Jan 2016 levels. I've lost like 40% of the value from where I was a month ago. It's a crazy hit but I guess I just have to say I lost 5 years of investment opportunity and keep plugging. Some of it will come back and I do have a few years before I should touch it anyhow. Sorry to all that had intentions for the money in the shorter term.

Job security is the real concern.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned much is that the Dow has been driven largely by global economic expansion, specifically China. i'm all for disengaging from China to at least some degree, but is it realistic? At a minimum we need to get ourselves out of a position where we are so reliant on them for critical goods.
