Knew it was coming, but it sucks. Storytelling vs a "good hook". He was a great one.

Well, he did know when to fold 'em.

May he rest in peace.

At least now he's got time enough to count his money.

He was a big deal for a while there. Sort of stereotypical late 1970s looking guy until the surgery.

He a couple of his songs turned into TV movies (Gambler and Coward of the County). Pretty rare for a song to inspire a movie.

And I still enjoy “Islands in Stream” with Dolly when it comes on 87.7.

That's a great song.

He was the first concert at the Peoria Civic Center. Also played the Heart of Illinois fair before that and it was the largest crowd ever for a show there.

One of the first songs I remember loving as a kid was "The Gambler". Probably the first song I memorized.

This soccer mom used to car pool me to soccer camps and games with her son. He was my best friend at the time. And I remember she played that song in her car on her cassette player. And his other songs. She loved Kenny Rodgers. That's how I got introduced to him.

She was decent looking. She had 4 boys at the time. My best friend was her 2nd youngest. She was a nice lady. When I was a little, white women were nice to me.

Not that anyone cares, but that best friend of mine was a hell of an athlete. He went on to play college basketball. Small school. I forget where. Then he played in an Italy league for a few years. He wasn't NBA good. I found this out from another friend of mine. I never talked to my best friend after 8th grade. You know how that goes. We went to different high schools.

To be honest, he stopped talking to me going into 7th grade. He was the cool athlete and I wasn't. And the girls loved him. So he hung out with the other cool kids.

I think that's the case for everybody. Where status matters at about the 7th grade. He had it. I didn't.
