Probably an old thread elsewhere but thought I’d start this. I inherited a shitty lawn and landscaping in the new house. Should have a lot of time this spring to whip it into shape. Spent $100 on grasss seed and patch yesterday. I’ve had a lot of luck with the patch stuff that comes in a bag. Looks like dried rabbit turds mixed with grass seed and fertilizer. Fortunately I have a small yard so I spread two bags of the patch and spread a bad of seed on my front yard. I could have used more patch but at $27 a bag I laid back. Maybe a bit early to do it but with rain this weekend and milder temps next week I thought I’d try it. Anyone else getting an early jump? I won’t fertilize until Easter probably

It’s good time to start easy raking to clean up leaves and crap that may have accumulated over the winter as long as you don’t overdo it and get to forceful. I always follow the 5 holiday rule when it comes to fertilizing (Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Halloween). I typically aerate and seed in September, but spring seeding is fine too. I may topdress my lawn this year with fresh topsoil and try to level out some areas. My lawn is already starting to green up noticeably, I may start puttering around out there this weekend.

How do you get rid of creeping Charlie? Fuck this shit to hell.

At my hold house, I pulled up all of the creeping charlie best I could and then called Spring Green or Tru-Green.

I plan on getting outside this weekend to rake and cut some stuff down before it starts to bud.

The only thing that has ever worked for me was the concentrated liquid weed killer that hooks up to the hose. My weeds laugh at the granules. Hit it once with the liquid and then spot spray the lawn all year long. The only granules I use is milorganite.

I’m going to spread some Turfbuilder today before the rain hits tomorrow. Should green up nicely next week.

i have 2 acres of lawn and a recent septic/leech field replacement and a new well was put in. with so many other projects the yard has taken a back seat.

i spray with Trimec to take care of charlie and clover and run initial fertilizer but thats it.

Creeping Charlie can get out of control but it is actually pretty easy to get rid of. Ortho concentrate in a 1-gallon spray can applied every two weeks and boom that shit is shriveling up and dying. You have to keep after it or it will rebound. Triclopyr is the active ingredient you want.

Wild violets are my nemesis. THAT shit is hard to eliminate. I have been slowly beating them back over the last couple years but they are hardy and don’t go away easy.

Bummer. I hadn’t seen the forecast. That’s ok, it’s still pretty early.

Milorganite is the shit. That stuff is like magic, that and Ringer are the only ferts I use. When it comes to granule weed killer, if you use it make sure you wet the lawn first or do it in the early morning when there is dew on the ground. That shit won’t work unless it sticks on the leaves. If your lawn is wet weed and feed will work much much better. It does nothing lying on the soil (crabgrass preventer is a different story).

I need to buy mofo some nice running shoes and have him come over to check out my lawn. It sucks. Weeds all over and needs to be regraded. He seems to know more about this shit than anybody else,

Frank do you have an old established lawn, or a new lawn? Is it more than 50% weeds? And how much shade/sun do you get?

Old. Probably more than 50% weeds in the back, maybe closer to 1/4-1/3 weeds in the front. Front lawn gets plenty of sun. Back lawn gets a lot of sun May-August, but not as much now as my house faces due south.

I like the holiday rule, but I would be concerned, from a weed perspective, that Easter's date is too variable. It's late this year, and I think if you wait until then, soil temps may have risen to the point where pre-emergent crabgrass preventers might not be effective.

creeping charlie is overrunning my backyard. i sprayed it once last year but didnt apply it enough times. i have a weird backyard where the back 1/2 acre is mostly useless and overrun by creeping charlie. i just want to get rid of it near my house. my wife wants to call a lawn company to deal with it

we had to re-side the house a couple years ago. the idiot prior owners had yew shrubs that they planted 3 feet from the damn house that they let get gigantic and overgrown. so i had to get rid of them just to complete the siding job. finally last fall i installed edging and 4" of mulch w/weedblock under it.... now we have no idea what the hell to plant...

Frank, my suggestion for you would be to get out and rake easily, get the soil and any thatch kicked up a bit, let some air in there. In about a month or so the weeds will be kicking into gear and start feeding. At that time I would let loose with a Scott’s weed and feed (again on a wet lawn, when there isn’t any rain forecast for at least a few days after) and that will definitely get you started in the right direction. Then I would get a 1-gallon spray can and used weed concentrate over the summer, targeting areas that need it most. Once you start getting the weeds under control and clear some of that out I would start using an organic fertilizer like Milorganite to help improve your soil. I would hold off on seeding until fall. Focus on the weeds this spring and summer. If you can get a handle on that and clear and strengthen the soil you will have a good chance for success with a major overseed project in September.

My landscapers just showed up. I haven't even contracted with them this year. I was planning to but figured there was no rush.

The holiday rule is strictly for fertilizer. Weed prevention and crabgrass prevention are ongoing processes I manage on an as-needed basis. I don’t have to deal with a lot of crabgrass typically, but early April is a good time to lay down crabgrass preventer and other pre-emergents. I spot-spray weeds independent of fertilizing.

move into my new house Monday. Have only seen the yard in the winter so have no idea how it's going to grow in. Also have some flower beds so don't know how those are going to grow in.

First project is putting up a small fence so I can let the dogs out in the yard. Don't want a full privacy fence since our backyard opens up to a nice park and want to be able to see that from the yard/house.

Depending on how the vegetation grows in we might tear it all out and put in more grass since the yard isn't that big as it is, want more room for the dogs.


Of course I'm not doing any of this shit myself since I haven't done an hours worth of manual labor in my life and don't plan to start now.

Creeping Charlie will definitely suffocate a lawn but Triclopyr sprayed regularly will eliminate it. You just have to commit to it for a couple treatments or it will rebound quickly.
