Moving during next week and unfortunately I am returning to Comcast land. Going to miss FIOS I thought they were pretty fair but things like voice remote were worse.

Anyway my question for the board. Have we ever reached a consensus on the best modem/wifi router combo to purchase for xfinity rather than rent? I am not going to full cut at least not yet. I will get their internet and basic hd tv the rest I stream.

I’d rather not rent their stuff. Thanks.

I've heard to avoid the modem/router combos, but anything modern should be able to pull the speeds you need.

so it sounds like you dont have a router currently either? my motorola sb6141 cable modem has been stellar but ive had it for many years so i wouldnt recommend buying that model. i thought motorola sold off their cable modem business too. as for separate vs the combo i guess that's just your preference and cost. just make sure the router can still do dual band since many wifi devices still dont do 5ghz. i had recent bad luck with a netgear ac router... wifi crapped out after a couple years, replaced with an asus and so far a few months in it's been good.

I've been using Netgear equipment for about 15 years now with no issues.

Agreed on separate modem and router.
I forget the modem I use, but recently switched to the Orbi router.....it's fantastic.

For the router, I've had an EA6350 for a few years and it is great. And though I live in a small apartment, the Linksys products have always worked great in larger homes and townhomes as well.

I like a basic Netgear modem with a Netgear Nighthawk wifi router. The modem model should be based on your speed and what the number of channels needed. Nighthawk should be sufficient for Wifi unless you have a very large house.

You want to get a Mesh Wifi like Orbi, Next Wifi or Eero. They are all roughly equivalent now. Mesh wifi is the standard.

Thanks everyone. I have seen the Eero but not Mesh yet. We stream basically one tv at a time but have us two and who knows how many kids/guests around at a time. I think I am going to get 300MBS. I do not think I needed the FIOS 1GPS they claimed honestly. I saw the nighthawk and seems to boast great things but need to reads the specs.

As for the home it is not quite Dennis levels but it is a 4 bedroom two story and full basement. Be nice to have better wi fi into the garage(attached) as well.

As for together or separate my old school thinking was you did not one one part to break only and have to replace the whole thing. Think stereo components. I have to say though in my house, not work, I have never had a modem or router break. It was always firmware or software at worst.

similar to my house.....get the orbi. There are 2 transmitters....you'll need them.

Update/review. Netgear is once again the greatest. Basic netgear CM700 modem and a Nighthawk router. I have never had such great coverage over and entire house and outside as well.
