Of course. There's the macro and the micro. The political and the personal. I've had one friend die and another thankfully just got off a ventilator after nine days. That's probably closer to home than for most people on the board. I'm old enough to be concerned about my own health let alone that of older and weaker relatives. But I don't think we can just make decisions based on our personal feelings. I've had a friend die in a car wreck. It's not some impetus for me to demand the banning of automobiles.

I'm not going to turn this into an abortion thread, but if it goes that way it's obviously not going to favor the philosophy you're putting forth.

It's not a strawman at all. We (society) weigh the value of lives against the benefits for us (society) all the time. We send 18 year olds to get blown up in foreign countries for economic reasons all the time. You may be against that, but there are certainly other risks to which you are willing to expose citizens because of convenience and/or economics.

JORR I’m asking about what’s going on right now. Car accidents don’t crash the economy. Sending young folks off to war doesn’t send the DOW tumbling. I didn’t talk about abortion, I spoke about being pro-life in all aspects. Life isn’t just the abortion issue. You are introducing all these unrelated topics. I’m asking what in your opinion is an acceptable amount of lives to sacrifice for the sake of your stock portfolio.

I think the "stock portfolio" thing is the real strawman. This is about what happens to a guy who tends bar for cash and doesn't even have a bank account. The guy who was already struggling and driving an Uber.

And I don't know what an "acceptable" number of lives would be. I don't think of it in such terms.

Forget about stock portfolio and view it in terms of lost jobs. Would you say we should try to save one 80-yr old (or any age) life if it means 100 people lose their jobs?

That's the point of the car analogy. Cars cause death in huge numbers. Why does society accept that cars exist, if preserving all life is paramount?
