What does "officially counts" mean? A student's grade still can't go down, it can only go up.

How does any kid pass the grade they are currently in? Shouldn't they have to redo the entire year/semester?

*I'll try and answer you like an adult, but I look forward to your well thought out name calling and insults.*

This is a nation-wide issue. Literally every student from pre-school through 12th grade is out of (traditional) school right now.
If no kids "passed the grade they are in", you'd be re-setting the educational system by one year in reverse all across the country....forever.
So from now on, the avg age of a graduating HS senior would be 19? Kids would enter Kindergarten at age 6? (Imagine the economic impact of that down the road?)

The better option is to move on as scheduled, and accept the fact that most kids will be.....roughly 1/4 of a SY behind what they would traditionally be, and adjust the curricula for next year for everyone. Somehow speed things up and try to catch most kids up.

Sorry to dismiss your question, but we ain't going back this year realistically.

But - good teachers can manage their kids no matter what the circumstance. They can keep them engaged and safe. I truly believe that.
Obviously there are some here that didn't have that experience themselves or with their children and that's unfortunate.
Most of the teachers I know have been busting their ass trying to adjust to the new educational environment that has been thrust upon them in the span of 10-14 days. It's just a matter of when their district decided to start to do e-Learning.

We would save a lot of money.

Sometime down the road...I can see this being an option because of this.

But - you know what the #1 reason is that would prevent this from ever happening??
THE VAST MAJORITY of parents want their kids to go to school. Either because they have to got to work themselves...so nobody would be home to watch them, or because the stay at home parents don't actually want to be bothered with their kids being home all the time.

Haven't been told this yet, but I have a feeling we will be going to pass/incomplete instead of actual grades.

My personal guess is that they will leave that option up to the local districts.

God forbid ISBE take a stance and stick with it.

Without on site instruction its tough. There are simply too many avenues with which to game the system.

If you cannot effectively assess students and hold them accountable then you aren't going to get much accomplished. That's why many of them are blowing this off.

They know that they can and there won't be repercussions. Its glorified extra credit work.

 parents never cease to amaze me. We got one demanding to see the 3rd quarter honor roll. 3rd quarter had just ended when we got out of school. Sure we will get right on that

You pretty much have to commit murder to not be passed on to the next grade at CPS. A little thing like taking the last two months off won't deter progress.

There was one interesting takeaway for me in that story LTG linked. If a district has 160 Instructional Days in, they are done. Now our state requires 180 with a set number being institute days which is what Indiana requires usually (quick google search). If Illinois adopted this same plan, our school is out May 1.

They have skewed so much towards data that the actual integrity (which should be an integral part of the process) is often compromised.

From test scores, graduation rates, on track rates, discipline, pass/fail rates etc. Every thing is about data.

If you are a teacher and your failure rate is too high they consider you to be a bad teacher. Many teachers are cognizant of this so they will pass students in many cases that shouldn't pass so that they will not receive a bad rating at the end of the year.

I've been really disappointed with the roll out on the grade school level. Three weeks in and most aren't performing on line classes and some aren't giving regular lessons/assignments.

My reply is purely anecdotal.

My wife has been teaching 1st grade for about 4 decades. She is warm, funny, strong, well qualified and very well respected. The district she teaches in is better than most and all of her kids have iPads. Through those devices there are a many of services/apps that specifically allow them to record short video/audio recordings and then go back and forth to allow for the teaching of reading and other assignments. For example, the kids record themselves reading a book, than my wife records a response giving suggestions for sounding out words or using context clues.

First of all, she’s a hero. She’s spending close to 10 hours a day navigating the technology, responding to the understandably exasperated parents, creating the lessons, grading (there are no grades at this level but she needs to respond) and then doing it all over again. This e-learning stuff was designed for a snow day here and there, not months of education.

Meanwhile, you’d be blown away by the creativity and growth of these 6 year-olds over the last few weeks. It's probably the most delightful age of any human being. They are yearning to learn, and while we all have problems, they (the 1st grader stuck at home with the parents) are under a certain stress of their own, one that my wife does a beautiful job of trying to mitigate for the entire family.

I know her parents appreciate her, as well as her colleagues-but outside of that I think people have the wrong idea of what teachers are doing.

Yes and no. It’s not only about failure rates. They do use data to track students and teachers. If your students fail but not at the same rate as they did in previous years they can tell if you are a good teacher. Teachers just pushing kids through the system do get exposed by good teachers eventually. Problem is that administrators don’t usually have the guts to do anything about it. They don’t want to make waves that could jeopardize their position. So the good teachers teach, the bad teachers do nothing and administrators sit back and collect a paycheck.

Yep. You're wife is doing it right for her kids, because that's what she does. She isn't trained to do this...she's just doing it. Every day.

There isn't a district or a state that was prepared for this, anywhere. It wasn't expected to happen. The people that care are doing the best that they can.
Yet there are parents (and non-stockholders) that still find a way to bitch and complain that the schools/teachers/districts not meeting their personal expectations.

Our school social media accounts have been posting updates about things a couple times a week. They recently moved high school graduation until the middle of June. A group of parents are freaking out because kindergarten graduation has been canceled and is not being rescheduled. HOW DARE THEY HAVE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION AND NOT KINDERGARTEN!?!?!?!? THE SENIORS ARE NOT THE ONLY STUDENTS THIS IMPACTS!?!?!

 People are so fucking stupid. Thank God we dont have an 8th grade graduation.

It was fine I just found the seriousness of it silly. We did one 31 years ago and I think it took 30 minutes. My daughter’s they had the kids give speeches. And by kids I mean any who wanted to along with guest speakers and awards. Holy hell.
