Here's a foolproof recipe

Rocks glass full of ice

Cover ice with a few shakes of bitters

1oz. Sweet Vermouth

2.5oz. Bourbon or Rye

Couple of maraschino cherries (Luxardo are tart and awesome)

That's it.

Pro tips: Add a teaspoon or so of the cherry syrup. Use a flavored bitters, orange, cherry, rhubarb, lemon are all excellent.
