40% of the country has "Confederate Pride."

There might be people flying the flag because it's a southern symbol or a renegade thing to do, but I don't think those people could name any prominent Confederate figures or lobby for a less centralized federal government.

There's a lot to be proud of when it comes to Southern contributions to American culture: music, literature, food. Fighting a war to keep slaves and losing isn't on the list.

Ha!

I was thinking Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson as the big three, obviously, the ones on Stone Mountain. A good handful might get P.G.T. Beauregard because that's not a name one readily forgets. I think real-ass southerners and chaspoppcap could name a lot more.

Yeah, the flag has some different connotations now (and obviously some of the old, intimidating ones, too). It can symbolize outsiderness, rurality, rebelliousness against the government, etc. I always snap photos of the flag when I see it in Illinois; it's fascinating. I know full well that many Midwesterners did not fight in the Civil War to free slaves, but they were still angry enough with the South to risk their lives and join the war. Now their descendants are flying the Confederate flag. We recycle symbols all the time, but I don't think you can wring out the implied threat in that one.

I am guessing the spelling and pronunciation would be off enough that name might be putting it kindly.

I would say it was less hate against the South than a chance for money and adventure. The soldiers did know what they were getting into. If you were an illiterate farm hand in Iowa fighting to "end slavery" probably would not resonate. It would sound like liberating Mars from Martians.

I can sympathize with them to an extent, though. They know that the other 60% probably demonizes them as ignorant, backwoods hicks. Sure, we're all responsible for our choices, but there's such a thing as pushing people into an identity. There's also few things (outside of violence) more stomach-churning than one person assuming they are better than another--particularly when you consider where the ancestors of the whites on this board came from.

Still, maybe a different symbol, huh? If it's gotta be Southern, why not Shoeless Joe? They could re-vamp the Dukes de Hazzard with the Shoeless Joe car.

You can say that, but there are records of Midwesterners who were really, really pissed that a chunk of the country up and left and was willing to defend itself. One of the books that talks about this is . . . well I can't remember, but I can picture the author. I've seen him on a number of CPSAN's Silver War shows. But rural or not, they were sophisticated enough to be angry about the Union dissolving. So let's not totally give in to rural stereotypes. Anyway, there are a lot of sources that document this, and I have so much respect for these soldiers.

Some of them also got pissed when Lincoln re-branded the war as a war against slavery. Not all of them, though, because may were abolitionists or transplanted New Englanders who were virtually abolitionists.

--"But there were sundown towns in Illinois!" Yeah, well, all Illinoisans didn't have the exact same beliefs.

Boy did I enjoy the game two weeks later. Especially after the opening kick return.

And the winning QB was a New Orleans native to boot!

The Bears ran the ball for nearly 200 yards on 46 carries and 3 TDs in that game. Rex had 144 yards passing and a 73 rating.

You're clinging pretty good.

We Bears fans watched the game. We remember the clutch deep 4th quarter pass to Berrian to put the game away. You may have been getting a facial while Sexy Rexy was outplaying Drew Brees.

Beating Brees and seeing you cry was a nice consolation prize.

The drive that put the game away was 4 rushes on a 5 play drive that ended with Benson scoring a TD. The nail in the coffin was a drive that consisted of seven straight runs by Thomas Jones until he hit paydirt, and the Bears went up 38-14 with four minutes left.

Amazing clinging.

Amazing clinging.

When Chicago's running game momentarily bogged down in the second half and the game got tight, Grossman stepped up with pinpoint passes.

He completed four throws in a row, three of them to speedy Bernard Berrian during a quick five-play, 85-yard drive.

Grossman lofted a pass into the snowflakes and the ball fell into the arms of a tumbling Berrian, who beat Fred Thomas for a 33-yard TD early in the fourth quarter. That made it 25-14, and the Bears were on their way.
