one part of the CARES act that has me scratching my head is the additional $600 that is being added weekly, across the board, to all individuals receiving unemployment benefits in illinois.

don't get me wrong, i'm ok with people getting unemployment benefits while they are laid off. the issue i have is the across the board policy with the extra $600.

i know a lot of people who were part-time employees earning less than $200 a week while they were working regular hours who are now laid off due to COVID19 and are now getting $650-700 weekly in unemployment benefits.

makes more sense to give them unemployment benefits equal to their average weekly pay.

My wife manages assisted living homes and it’s hard to staff them right now because people can make more sitting at home. I just don’t know where they got that figure from or where the money is coming from. Definitely bot saying people shouldn’t get benefits but seems very generous for some.

Three Republican Senators tried to change that, but Sanders pushed back. Most assume it was a drafting error.

In any case, the extra benefits are temporary. It’s not that big of a deal. A little extra cash to very low wage people is a good thing right now.

I am happy my fellow Americans are getting extra financial assistance in a seriously terrible economic situation.

Very confused as to why this is an issue for some.

More scraps for the peasants to fight over while corporate capitalists carry away bags of money to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars.

Every family of the 90 million people killed by this thing should get a million dollars. Jeff Bezos can pay for it all.

Didn't you say only a 1,000 people would die from this? At least that is a real quote.

Your 90 million is a real quote as well.

And unlike you and MANY here, I admitted to being woefully wrong.

I know that I never said that 90 million would die from this.

You do seem to care because you are bringing it up.

Don't be so scared.

Do you know that you said a third of the country is at risk from dying?

Simple math was done to get that 90 million figure. Don't be scared to admit you were wrong. Nobody is perfect. Even Jesus was baptized.

Guys, let's take this argument out of this thread and focus on the terrible topic created by ontiveros.

This kind of implies that he starts good topics, which I don't believe has ever happened.

These people getting the extra money should turn it back over then turn around and die. Great thought.

to get this economy out of the Mariana Trench, the best way will be to hand poor people lots of money and tell them to go spend it.

I'd rather give unemployed people an extra 600 that will be spent. The airlines are getting 50 billion after spending 45 billion buying back their own stock so their execs could get huge raises.

And thus my problem with the airlines bailout. Once the government does that, you can justify any other type of spending because of your correct logic.

God hates poor people so it goes against Natural Law to give them money.

yep....it's amazing how people are skeptical of government. God Forbid the bill just be limited to sending money to individual taxpayers, which most people have zero issue with.

I do feel sorry for those who are still working who would be making more money if they were laid off though. That's the biggest flaw with how things were done.

Bernie actually did screw this whole thing up. There would have been a better way to handle it but he dug in on it.
