(670 The Score) New Bulls head of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas has made the first addition to his front office.
Chicago will hire J.J. Polk as an assistant general manager, Shams Charania of the Athletic reported. K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago first reported the news that the Bulls were close to finalizing the deal.
Polk has spent the past decade with the Pelicans, most recently serving as their executive director of basketball administration. He's known as a salary cap specialist with a strong understanding of the collective bargaining agreement. Prior to joining the Pelicans, Polk practiced law.
Rice earned his law degree from the University of Illinois after attending undergraduate school at Rice, where he played collegiately. He played professionally in Sweden, Latvia and China, according to the Pelicans' media guide.

Adrian Griffin would be a solid hire but he doesn't coach at Iowa State, so how would that work?

As Assistants go his name has been one of the hot ones for the last couple of years. He was always known as a smart, heady, grindy type of player. Might work but I want them to hire a guy with previous coaching experience.

To hire an inexperienced guy with ties to the organization is just so Reinsdorfian.

yeah I would prefer someone with previous coaching experience.

Who is your guy(s) you would like to see hired or considered, Ltg?

Of the out of work guys it would have to be Atkinson. He would be my first choice. He gets maximum effort out of his players and he is a pretty solid bench coach. I don't like his overemphasis on analytics and over reliance on the 3 but if I had a guy that I'd like it would be him.

I also like Sacramento's coach from last season Joerger. He is a really good coach that got screwed over in Sacramento. Either of those two would be fine by me.

I've met Polk. He's a nice guy.

They should give the woman in San Antonio a shot. I think she's the heir apparent to Popovich, so she might decline or Popovich may just retire rather that put up with playing in empty stadiums.

It'd be fun just to watch Dan Bernstein's head explode when the Bulls start the season 2-8 like they would do for any new coach.

How do you hire the assistant before you hire the GM?

I meant after they hire the GM. Firing Jimbo is a given.

Bernstein stated unequivocally that if Boylen is retained, this process can be immediately called a complete failure. I agree with that, but don't see any reason other than $$$ why they would keep him.

If it is Karnisovas responsibility to name the GM and the Assist GM then it really doesn't matter who is first.

I thought a GM generally has a voice when it comes to selecting his subordinates.

There's not going to be one GM in name only. Multiple assistant GM's. This guy's focus is the cap.

Cowley saying they are close to hiring Denver scout Pat Connelly who was previously the Assistant GM with Suns and that there is a lot of smoke around Adrian Griffin

It's all about money - i called it the minute Hoiberg was fired. No way they were going to pay top dollar for three coaches at the time (Thibs, Hoiberg, Boylen). You go with Boylen to keep your commitment low for coaches. With Hoiberg off the books perhaps they splurge. But again Boylen was always about money.

Boylen will be whacked. Sam Smith is more connected to the organization than any writer in this city. He has been highly critical of Boylen's coaching this season. There is no way that his views aren't reflective of the views of the organization as a whole regarding Boylen.

If GarPax were brought back he'd still have been whacked IMO. He's done. Book it!

He is only making a Mil a season and I think the 2nd year is an option. They will eat whatever salary they have to with him

The truth is the Bulls have done well in free agency. Ben Wallace may be in the Hall of Fame some time. Sam Smith

Why is that? Do you know enough about Booth to say he should be the guy?

He knows more about Booth than any candidate. He's worked with him daily. To have him AS a candidate and NOT hire him? I dunno, just seems like a low blow. If it was me and the guy thought of me enough to be a candidate, I would be kinda thinking "I got this if I don't fuck it up"

Yeah I can see that. But maybe Booth likes where he is and thinks he will have a better opportunity there. There are a lot of variables in play with stuff like this.

It's hard to say if it's a sideways move. These titles have become wacky. Karnisovas is essentially the GM in old school terms.

You usually want to stay away from teams that are irrelevant like the magic. I'd be interested in someone who can bring the Houston model over here. That team was formed into a decent contender out of basically nothing. They traded for harden before he became James Harden and built two teams around him. Someone from Presti's tree is also obviously intriguing.

I'm the rare bird not impressed with what Houston has become.

Parkins threw out an intriguing idea today. If the situation with the Jazz is really not repairable then try to go after Mitchell or Gobert in a trade. Would love to have Mitchell.

You also absolutely need someone who can connect with the players. That's not necessarily Houston but we desperately need that after having the toxic Forman who had no cultural/political capital to leverage with players. Magic Johnson sucks as an executive but he's still an asset when it comes to players. Being in LA doesn't hurt of course. I'd get Pippen and other former Bulls fan favorites into the organization as figureheads. Show the players we take care of our own and have people in charge who have been there done that. Surely the city can do better than Carlos Boozer as its top free agent acquisition, or a washed up Ben Wallace.
