1996 Shaq is inferior to 1998-2003 Shaq. The latter was the best player in the league while the former was a young dude who didn't know how to use his powers.

Once Shaq hit his prime he dominated every decent and no man big on earth. He decimated the twin towers in San Antonio, dispatched every big Portland threw at him (Sabonis, a young Jermaine O'neal, Dale Davis, Rasheed Wallace, Chris Dudley), and didn't have trouble with the Ostertags and whoever else was left. Rodman was good but he's only 6'7. He got to him in 1996 but again Shaq was a different player later on.

So yes, while Shaq may have dominated the immortal Chris Dudley, Tim Duncan was still his superior when both were at their best. Give Duncan Kobe and he would have had 10 rings.

Jackson arrived in LA for 1999-2000. For three straight years the Spurs did jackshit while the O'neal-led Lakers went to three finals, winning all three. The Spurs won it all in 2002-03 while a past his prime O'Neal (21ppg for the season, down from 27) destroyed the Spurs in 2003-04 before losing to the Pistons in the finals.

So from 1998-99 to 2003-04, which is inclusive of a past his prime O'neal, here's how it went:

Shaq: three rings, four finals
Duncan: one legit ring, one sort of ring, and two finals.

Anyway you slice it Duncan comes out the better player. Especially if you start comparing the 2nd best player on each one's roster throughout their careers. Shaq was carried by Penny, Kobe, and Wade his entire career. Duncan had 2 borderline All Stars at best as his teammates.
