We pulled our "fact checkers" out.
We ignored the past.
We reduced our preparedness.
We didnt bother restocking the cupboard.

Now we blame China, who should never be wholly trusted on anything.

Now we blame the WHO who have no real power.

None of this relates to the question. The Geopolitical situation of Southeast Asia isn't relevant to the question.

The Korean peninsula isn't in Southeast Asia......

Ok great it isn't. How is this relevant to anything that I previously stated?

if the WHO has no real power then why do they need to be funded by us?

They aren't solely funded by us.

If his actions were due his being misinformed then shouldn't South Korea have taken actions that were similar to his? After all they received similar information at exactly the same time.

Imo and from opinion pieces I've read, SK had better plans in place and communication between hospitals and local/national government because of their dealings with Sars/Mers in the past. They are more alert and have a better idea of what to be doing than most other countries because they've been able to learn from the past and their people will go along with it because of the past which I also think is key. It seems like most are on the same page and I'd think that would make things easier.

I agree with that but when presented with similar situations as Trump both Obama and Bush reacted completely differently. They prepped in ways that were similar to the way that South Korea prepared.

They took the initial threat seriously. They beefed up the Govt agencies in preparation for such an event. They listened to the experts on the ground. They also had experts on the ground in China too.

Absolutely.

Sen. Tom Cotton is the only politician that got this right.

But I thought he was spreading a debunked conspiracy theory? Looks like MANY owe him an apology.

I don't know about that. I think they all handled it in the way they thought was right with the info they had. It'd be difficult to deal with an illness that nobody knows much about or how to treat it. This one is magnified because it's Trump and it's more contagious and more severe than those others. No govs were shutting down their state or asking for 40k ventilators for whatever reason in the past.

I don't know the WHOs involvement in the past but China and the WHO have not been honest about this from the start and they are continuing on that path now. I don't fault the elected officials for saying it was fine to go out thru the first week of March or so. They didn't know what they didn't know. I don't think of the presidents did anything well or terrible in their respective cases, it just kind of is/was.

I have never said anything about them being a governing body. I just do not understand why it is so important for us to continue to drop tax payer money into a group that has no real power and has pretty much screwed this whole deal up.

Dropping their funding isn't enough. They need to be eradicated and written into the history books as the perpetrators of crimes against humanity.

If anything it's being downplayed by Trump's supporters because its Trump. There is no doubt that their reaction would be completely different if it were Biden, Hillary, or Clinton. That is what they have always demonstrated. The same people that complained about the alleged corruption of the Clinton Foundation didn't so much as bat an eye when it was proven that Trump stole from his own charity. Not once. I'm fairly certain that if I were to conduct a search regarding that issue you would be in that group. Just like they overlooked his defrauding of people as part of Trump University.

The people that excuse Trump for everything will always be expected to excuse his behavior on anything. He wasn't provided with misinformation. He didn't act on the information that was provided at the time. South Korea's reaction validates this. Bush and Obama's reaction to similar pandemics validates this. The reaction of people in Trump's own administration validates this.

He had to be informed by a talk show host as to its severity. Capable, Competent Presidents never would have needed that.

That is a good assessment. In something like this, people do make mistakes and hindsight is 20/20.

if the WHO has no real power then why do they need to be funded by us?

They aren't solely funded by us.

I understand that.

So if they have no real power why do they need partial funding from us?

Why dont you go read their mission statement

Clearly the Jet is a great fan of the WHO and China. Any thing to blame Trump for.

Your rage is misplaced.

But you know that.

Jet keeps going farther and farther down the path of Communism in his hatred of Donald Trump. He gets more and more irrational by the hour. Its really ridiculous.

The US provides roughly 2% of the WHO's funding.

Its not "nothing", but it's not something that is a show-stopper like everyone is making it out to be.

Have you watched his pressers? The first half-hour is just him bragging. Sometimes the bragging is unrelated to the current crisis. A real problem with Trump- maybe his main problem- is he is too worried about what people say about him. For example, he was criticized about ventilator shortages so now he loves to talk about how many we're making. Never mind that there now seems to be a surplus and doctors are questioning whether venting is the correct treatment for this. Trump is reactive rather than proactive.

Its all he cares about. Seriously, its fucking pathetic. Is it as pathetic as the liberals who compare any time they are out of power to Germany in the thirties? No, not quite. But still, its a poor reflection of the Republican party. What makes the Republicans so likable to me is their opposition to ideology and their smugness in victory. Trump is at least anti-ideological but he's so fucking insecure that anyone who pays him a compliment, even if its Kim Jong Un or Xi Jinping paying the compliment, gets the favour returned ten times over.

Not really. He says nice compliments to world leaders but that's about it. The thing with Trump is that too many people pay all the attention is what he says and not enough attention to what he does. He does a whole lot of good things and that is what is really important. He gets things done. Many former presidents promised a ton of things and never delivered. Trump promised a lot of things and he delivered on most of them along with some that he didn't promise like the Right to Try Act .

Its not a trivial amount of money. The US paid almost $900M dollars in 2018-19 in voluntary funding while China only paid about 10% of that.

Seems like the Misleading WHO was leading on this back in January.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/as ... story.html
Quote:
Officials said it’s not unusual in outbreaks of respiratory illness for patients to become infected through close contact with family members and in health-care settings, as has happened in Wuhan. What matters is the route of transmission and whether authorities can track those contacts down, they said.

“There are still many unknowns,” said Michael Ryan, the WHO’s executive director of health emergencies.

He said that the patients who died in China tended to be older people, and that 40 percent had significant underlying medical conditions, a feature of previous coronavirus outbreaks.

He noted that all viruses change but that this one is showing stability. “We’re not seeing huge changes in the viral genomic sequence,” he said.

President Trump said from Davos, Switzerland, where he was attending the World Economic Forum, that Americans have nothing to worry about because there was only a single case in the United States so far. “It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control,” he said.

But at least so far, the virus has defied control in China.

“At present, during the Spring Festival travel rush, the number of people on the move has surged, which has increased the risk of an epidemic and the difficulty of preventing and controlling transmission,” National Health Commission Vice Director Li Bin said Wednesday, using the Chinese name for the holiday.
