They get complete/incomplete. I am getting about 75-80% turn in. Though its not in any type of timely fashion. This is also 6th grade.

The high schools near us aren't even getting close to 50% from what I have been told. We were also told yesterday that if our athletes do not have 5 completes at the end of the semester they can not play sports in the fall if school starts back up.

It's not a true assessment. Its essentially extra credit at best and at the High School they can mostly forget it. There is no way that they are going to do 6-7 hrs of homework a night.

Yeah I'm interested to see if the IHSA waives grade eligibility requirements next semester.

Indiana cut the year from 176 to 160.

I had noticed that when they did it a few weeks ago. I would guess if that were the case our district would be done around May 1. We are all set up to do online professional development, I've been trying to look at new curriculum for my subject area and will meet via Google Meets next Friday. There is plenty to do to finish this year the best under the circumstances and prepare for next year.

We were supposed to receive our new math materials for next year at the end of May and the online component was supposed to be ready by July 1st. I wonder what happens with that now.

Do you expect sports to be played next semester?

If we are in school then yes. You cant pack classrooms and hallways with kids then say sports are too dangerous to play. Part of me thinks JB wants to go a full year out of school though. That will be a shit show in August.

This is where people take for granted how much of IL, WI and other areas are rural. MANY do not have the setup to do eLearning / remote learning.

Public school is going to have to open next fall....or we will see decisions moved to the county level.

Very prevalent down in the south too.

I have a buddy in MI who has satellite internet.

He said it is not usable for e learning. So, there goes like 1/2 of the population in IL alone.

there are many districts that will be forced to hold students back a year. Lots of places just not having school since the shut down.

But it's ok.....at least everyone is safe.

the rural telco's and isp's connections are pretty much redlined starting around 11:00 each day and don't let up until about 10pm. many just don't have the backbone to handle the increases.

You pretty much have to murder a teacher in order to not pass a grade, right?

Schools that do not have that in place have kids that missed 3 months of classes. They're going to be ready for the next level?
Yes, in this area where there is eLearning kids will be moved along. It's a different discussion if there's no school at all.

Yes. People in areas of natural disasters get moved along all the time while missing months of school. You cant clog the system by holding everyone back.

Kids are pretty much never held back back before high school. The exception being kids 1st grade and under. Holding them back in later grades does more harm than good. In high school they just keep taking the same classes until they either drop out or get shipped off to alternative school.

many teachers already teach in a manner that assumes the a chunk of their class have no recolletion of the things they were taught the year prior. now they'll just know.

Except for the top 10-15 percent of smart and motivated people, the way to make us more dumber would be to have e-learning all the time.

What follows is entirely unrelated:

Nardi recommends a good book
and rubs a good foot

the second part is just
what I have heard

No way you just hold everyone back a year. Would cause headaches far worse than missing a couple months.

For one, you would have a next years kindergarten class that is +/- double the size of every other class in each school district, and 13 years for that blob to move through the system. Schools don't have the classroom space/teachers to do that, and definitely won't have the budgets for it now. What about all the seniors that have accepted spots, put deposits down, etc. at colleges. We tell them sorry, another year of high school for you.

We have a school district down here that had a protest today by students and parents saying the school is giving too much virtual work and not giving enough time to get it done.

My kids say the same thing. I ask them if they have something else going on that they can’t do a few hours of school work. They hang their head and walk away but they test me every day. I know they are just trying to get on fortnite and Minecraft earlier. Those parents are fucking spineless. I wish my kids had more work. E-learning, walks and electronics - not much else to do. I know my kids must be about ready to go nuts. To go from multiple activities all year long to absolutely nothing and deal with their insane father 24/7 has to be miserable.

No kidding . . . give them more work, please. It doesn't have to be busy work, either.

I don't understand why they aren't meeting with classes every single day online. Or why my kids don't have to collaborate with other kids; they can do this easily.

They spent a month getting kids without technology Chromebooks. Maybe they don't have the Internet at home. But still . . . this isn't school. This is fucking enrichment, and shitty enrichment at that. The work is about as in-depth as CCD or VBS.

I'm glad we have a treadmill and a stationary bike, though. That helps them get some exercise.

There are plenty of kids collaborating. A smart one does the work, screen shots, then sends it to the group chat for the rest to fill out.

My district does not allow us to video meet students without another staff member also on the video. We also can not record sessions which is fine. I meet with each of my classes once a week and have never gotten more than 50% of a class to show.

My wife is technologically challenged, to put it lightly. She has been dragged kicking and screaming into recording video for her classes (first and second grades in a combined classroom, parochial school, 27 kids total.) Today she met with four sub groups who requested help via Zoom.

The school has teachers man the parking lot on certain days for homework being turned in and assignments going out- she waited from 4-6 yesterday for two families to show. Three, if you count the Pastor who lives in the parsonage on the other side of the parking lot who dropped off his kid's work.

She sent home a project for Science that involved seeds, some paper towel and a nylon stocking. It doesn't seem all too difficult to me, but she got six messages about it. Did you read the half-sheet of instructions I sent with the project parts? -uh, no. Did you watch the video of someone else showing how to complete the project that I linked? uh, no.

No wonder the kids struggle. At six, they are on their own.

I'm guessing the are worried about virtual pedophilia? But wouldn't recording everything help prevent that?

How many of the aprox 150K tablets/laptops they are just throwing out to CPS students will simply become "lost"? So that is what another 2-3 mil or so?
