‘Trolls World Tour’ Breaks Digital Records and Charts a New Path for Hollywood
In three weeks of digital release, ‘Trolls’ sequel has made more money for Universal Pictures than original did during five months in theaters

AMC Theatres on Tuesday delivered a blistering message to Universal Pictures, saying the world's largest cinema chain will no longer play any of the studio's films in the wake of comments made by NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell regarding the on-demand success of Trolls World Tour and what it means for the future of moviegoing post-coronavirus pandemic.

Theaters are still useful for people who want to go out. Of course they are making more money by home release when everyone is sitting at home with their kids.

There really isn't a true reason to prop up movie theaters any more than we should have propped up video rental stores. They can find a way to survive with movies immediately being available to purchase in my home or they can go away too.

It is not about propping up. A lot of people who go to theaters do so to get away from their kids for a few hours or go on a date. Basing their current success on anything more than people not allowed to leave their houses is flawed.

It's pretty tough to draw anything conclusively from this event.

Most movies do a run at the box office followed by a significant bump when they hit video on demand. Trolls 2 won't be getting that added bump.

Seeing a movie will become a capital-E Event like going to a baseball game did: not something you pop on by to spur-of-the-moment on some idle day, but rather a special event that you wait days and days for and go downtown for. TVs are big, sound systems are good, your own floors hopefully aren't covered in spilled soda and full of someone else's shitty kids. 30-screen theaters and so forth were already dying, the bat plague will finish them off. 8th graders will have to get handjobs someplace else.

Those people still can do that. The studios aren't going to stop putting their movies in theaters. They'll just let people who don't want to get a babysitter for the night be forced to wait 9 months so they can watch Fast and the Furious 12: The squeakwal

This is a hissy fit being thrown by a theater chain because a dumbass executive ran his mouth.

Nothing to see here.

I don’t think these movies will be free.

Disney+ had Mulan for $35.

They will not cost extra.

This is great for everyone but movie theater owners. Movie theaters provided no added value.

Not for adults.

Even though seeing certain films in a theater is a good experience, it doesn’t justify $30 for a couple or $100 plus for a family.

You might as well say, “Someone please argue with me!!!”

Movie theaters are great for seeing bigger budget, or Oscar nominated movies.

I don't mind going to the movies every once in a while but if they can't survive without exclusive access to new releases then I think it's safe to say there was no added value to them.

Just the lead dominoes though.

Business model transforming is the obviously bigger story.

The huge multiplexes are dead for sure. I wonder about the places trying to be a combo restaurant and movie theater. It feels like this is a blow for kids and teenagers looking to meet somewhere. I guess everyone will just virtually meet from their rooms now.

The brew and view with recliners and decent-ish food will have a place. The 3-D movies will have a place.

This isn't because of Covid. It was already coming.

I'm not going to miss the movie theater. The best investment I made over the last few years was the home theater. I get the beautiful picture, sound, comfy chair, etc. without having to worry about the loud couple behind me or missing something because I have to take a leak.

As Golden Jet said, I'm sure the boutique theaters that have a full service restaurant and bar will survive but the AMC multiplexes are dead.
