Look at Chas. Who knew that you were such the critic of this "unfair" system? When did this occur Chas? When CPS teachers began to get paid for a few months for work they "aren't" doing? I don't want to really make this political but considering that you have never really concerned yourself with fairness and equity before, I will simply presume that this one doesn't pertain to what you consider to be fair.

You openly support Trump though it has repeatedly been pointed out that he routinely fucks over people so I will simply state that your newfound concern for what's fair is a tad fake.

We are getting paid because we have an ironclad contract which states that we have to be paid. We will not if the state lacks the funds.

People need to know their stuff in order to be certified, but there are different ways to get that accomplished and I am glad some states recognize that. I had to take 3 pretty difficult tests and if I passed all of them and had like 80 hours of classroom observation then I could be certified. It was hard, but it was better than having to go back thru a bunch of college classes that I did not need and would not really help in the profession. Hopefully more states go that route as we move forward.

Definitely. They'd get better and more interesting teachers, too.

I get the preparing but if we start the year with this it will be a mess. It is one thing to work with students and parents you have had for 2/3 of the year. Another to work with kids you have never met before.

another situation where it should not be one size fits all for the schools throughout a state. Students in areas where there are only small number of cases should be able to go to real classes and not be forced to e learn because that is what is needed around Chicago

Today the idea of possibly having half our students every day to start the school year as a potential option being discussed. I would teach the same thing Monday and Tuesday then Wednesday and Thursday etc. Would be more complicated then it sounds if parents are back to work, teachers who have kids etc. Plus siblings going to school on different days.

That would obviously mean no sports in the fall if districts did that. Hopefully things clear up by July and we go back as normal. I think it simply comes down to what the states around us end up doing.

I think it will be all or nothing. But who knows with this state.

Is this something that would be state wide or are districts getting to do what they think is best?

Our district is saying be prepared for remote learning.

I mentioned this option to you a couple of weeks ago. I also mentioned the option of "split days" - Group 'A' goes to school from 7-12, group 'B' goes to school from 1-6, or something similar.

If it happened, it would be state wide. But it pretty much can't happen, IMHO, because the kids can't get to school using these distancing guidelines. Especially CPS.

The state has been saying this for 2 weeks.

Pretty sure the state. I don't think our admin like that idea very much. Our meeting was more about end of year procedures and to be prepared for both in school and out of school in August. If it is left up to individual districts we will do what ever the high school we feed into does. But I don't think JB will do that.

I would love to see private schools vs JB in August. If they can not open on time some will end up closing.

Some close every year. Some aren't viable. It happens.
Whatever happens with public schools next fall will be state-wide. There is no local option.

ISBE also just crapped on the "virtual graduations" that many schools were trying to do (lead by Bradley-Bourbonnais HS).
It sucks for seniors this year, but it is what it is, I guess.

Closing because they are not allowed to open is a bit different.

Sort of.
How many public districts will "close" because of the same reason? My point is, many of those private schools are basically shell games from year to year anyway. It's a matter of time for some of those schools.

Mt Carmel ain't closing.
St Rita aint closing.
JCA ain't closing.

I'm not a catholic league guy, but I could go on.

Public schools do not rely on tuition. So not even close to the same thing. What happens to JCA if there is no school in the fall? Where do all those freshman go for remote learning? Do they pay the 6k for the semester to sit on an Ipad or sit on a Ipad for free at Plainfield Central or Joliet West? Do they decide to transfer back in January? No JCA would not close next year but it could cripple that place or any of them financially. Especially the ones without deep alumni pockets.

I assume that if parents feel strongly enough to pay $6K for the quality of HS tuition for their student, on top of the taxes they already pay, they would do so no matter the setting. Especially when you consider "legacy", as many of these people do.

Using the examples you listed, they're gonna "sit on iPad" no matter where they go. But a lot of those JCA parents are scared to death of their kid having a diploma that says "Joliet West"...which is the whole reason why they pay that $. You know this. Probably the same reason why they wouldn't want the diploma to say the 3rd best Plainfield HS too.

We already have Purdue and Marquette coming forward stating they will welcome students on campus in the fall.

For Primary and Secondary schools it will be interesting to see if the Private Schools make a decision before the state does. I, too, would love to see the Private schools take on the Governor and try to open. The city is one thing....there are plenty of private, religious high schools located throughout the state. Many are financially very healthy and I would think their best interests are to be open in the fall.

I wonder what my districts numbers are. We have to report every week students who do not turn in anything. Then email and call the parents.

Wait spanky is a teacher? Not surprising. Easy to say "lock down" forever when you are collecting a steady pay check every week doing 1-2 hours of Zoom calls per week.

I'm going to say the main reasons for attending a typical Chicago area private school (other than the real elite institutions, e.g. St. Ignatius, Latin, Francis Parker, Roycemore, etc.) don't include the "prestige" of the diploma. It's more likely about things like discipline and religious education (indoctrination). If we're all on iPads that stuff is largely mitigated and an e-class on Catholicism probably does not justify the cost.

I would put athletics first or second with discipline depending on family. Religion would be third at best for the high school level in majority of cases. Prek-8 schooling is discipline and religion.

So the #1 reason is something that doesn't affect the majority of students and the school's mission is a distant third?

Teachers are heroically getting on line from their home and teaching a fraction of their normal workload.

It would actually be about 6th. At least on the South side. Academics/Discipline/Athletics/Legacy/Friends. The order varies by kid and family. Also matters if you are city or suburb. I never once had a kid who made it into a selective high school not chose that route when I taught in the city. In the three years I taught there I had one student attend South Shore which was the neighborhood school, the rest went to selective schools or Catholic schools.

The suburban schools were more split on high school between public and private. Around 08-09 a lot of parents started sending their kids public due to the economy. Their children were having success both in school and athletically. It snowballed to the point where a lot of our kids ended up going public. This was rare for a catholic school in our area. We caught some heat one year for letting the local public high school come in and talk to the kids after the catholic school step up day. But our principal was just doing what the parents wanted.

To get back the question. I only heard a few parents talk about religion when selecting high school and never a kid.
