Sent me a threatening letter that I underpaid my taxes by a few dollars last year on some bullshit technicality.

These fuckers must be desperate.

Would you have a problem if your employer paid you for 38 hours of work but you clocked in for 40?

Remove all the toilets in your home, get a refund from property taxes, and pay this. When they look at you, like you are crazy....point to good ole JB.

Mail them a bag of pennies.

Maybe I will donate them a few boxes of N95s so they don't have to order them from China.

Listen, Joker, I have a Big Five accountant and a bookkeeper who use return-checking software to file all of my stuff. If anything was not punched-in correctly or owed, the software typically red-flags it. Anytime I submit a return, it is always cleared for submission by both the software and the highly-experienced accountant. I talked to my guy, and I could fight this, and he said that I would likely win, because he believes that they are wrong, however, it it is such a de minimus amount, that it would actually not be worth my time to even wait on hold, if indeed they even had offices still open to take such calls amid this crisis.

It is within my rights to bitch and complain about it to you fellows, though.

Since you know so much about accounting firms, who might I ask is the fifth of the big ones? I seem to recall there are only four, and it’s been that way for a long time.

If you could keep your positions consistent from one thread to another that would do wonders for not looking like a complete piece of shit.

Kind of funny too because I don’t know any individual that uses a big four firm for personal tax returns. There are smaller firms that help private businesses. No one is paying PWC to file their state taxes.

Yeah it sucks. I even do my own taxes, but it is getting hard even with TurboTax. The 529 stuff is stupid difficult because the universities don’t put all the costs on the forms they send you.

That is a good observation for somebody as well-versed in the field as yourself, however, without divulging any additional info, which I don't think is proper in a forum such as this, I will only say that I stand by my post(s).

Yeah no biggie. Just giving you crap over the big five comment. The big five went away when AA bit the dust in the wake of the Enron scandal.

Yeah, I'm not an expert on that subject, so its not a wall that I want to die on here. Colloquially, that is just what was always said in reference to this person and firm.

I often thought about doing taxes when I retire. But I do not practice in public audit. Frankly I took the CPA exams for fun. I wanted to learn about taxes and auditing. My discipline is security analysis and financial accounting.

I think they can still be called "the Big Five" even though Arthur is gone. It's sort of like the Big Ten having 14 teams.

You can do whatever you want, but no one in that world says big five. It used to be big eight, then seven and so on. The industry lingo has long been big four.

Well, I'll call bullshit then.

As Deni$ pointed out, it hasn't been a Big 5 in years.

This, and the fact that IDOR doesn't send a first letter that is "threatening" to anyone other than a guy like Panther.

I received a letter last fall from a return filed five years prior.

Nothing threatening in the least, and they cut all penalties and fees for a quick payment resolution too.

Positively scary stuff from the IDOR...

Based on information we received from the Internal Revenue Service, under authorization of the Internal Revenue Code,

10 working days. You may also pay the tax, penalties, and interest due by using your Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or
American Express. The credit card service provider will assess a convenience fee. Have your credit card ready and visit

If you do not protest this notice or pay the balance due in full, we may take collection action against you for the balance
due, which may include levy of your wages and bank accounts, filing of a tax lien, or other action.
