Yep. He was an asshole then and is an asshole now.

He tried to do that behind Krause's back, but Phil wouldn't play ball. Phil should be taking a beating for the break up of this team.

Even if Phil returned, wasn't the team going to be broken up? I thought Reinsdorf gave Phil the option of returning, but without Pippen or Rodman.

No owner can guarantee the return of every player. I imagine this Phil and Jordan could have gotten both players to return.

Reinsdorf wasn't going to pay Pippen. End of story. End of dynasty. Reinsdorf's story isn't news. It was out there back then. And dismissed for what it was. Garbage.

They gave Pippen a max contract that was still tradeable a year later and gave him a golden parachute the last 2 years of his career.

Is that what happened? They signed Pippen long term and then went out and found a trade partner?
Don't make me call you a dumbass. This is the 2nd time you brought up this crock of a story.

I thought Bird said that to Jordan. It doesn't make sense the other way around.

They worked out a sign and trade deal so Pippen could get more money. Instead of 4 years and $45M, Scottie got 5 years and $67M. They didnt need to do that. Pippen's contract was still tradeable the following season. He was traded from Houston to Portland.

It doesn't matter who said it. It was not a big deal. It was 2 old rivals/friends sharing a moment. There was no bad looks on anyone.

It is completely beside the point. The point is Reinsdorf was not going to pay him. Not for one year, not for 4, not for 5. You have not rehabilitated Reinsdorf in ANY WAY.

Besides the point? Pippen got 50% more money that he never would have received on the open market and the Bulls took back bad contracts.

Yeah, it was interesting the way Hehir made a point of including footage showing Jordan and his vanquished foes--Magic, Bird, Malone, etc--getting along following their matchups. It's almost like he really wanted to make Isiah look bad.

Yup. Completely beside the point. The point is going from a dynasty to a rebuild. It's what Reinsdorf wanted, and he explicitly said it, and it's what he got. All these "favors", the sign and trade and the offer to Jackson, was PR. It was putting perfume on a pig.

Enjoy your pig.

Agreed. I thought it was also cool to see how Larry fucking Bird--one of the toughest, most hard nosed players in NBA history--could both pay respect and be pissed about losing to Jordan at the same time. In some respects, Bird and Jordan are the same guy even though they come from completely different backgrounds. It was great to see how they interacted when they weren't performing for the cameras.

Cutting and zooming to Bird's quite perturbed face whilst the rest of the Pacers ran around celebrating like assholes when there was .7 seconds left on the clock and Jordan's ball was masterful cinematography/editing.

My favorite part of the entire thing though was the amount of swearing they allowed. It was great hearing all these legendary figures telling each other to fuck off, etc.

I think MJ is looking at this thru some revisionist history. I am not sure he was as eager to come back in the moment as he appears to be now. If he wanted to sign a 1 yr deal and Reinsdorf was willing to make that happen then you cannot tell me they couldn't have got things worked out.

My wife didn't know anything about the Bulls except that Jordan played for them and they won a lot. She was puzzled that the whole last episode was about how difficult it was for the Bulls to squeak past Indiana and then how spent they were in the Utah series and how they- and Jordan himself- kept saying Jordan was "exhausted" and "running on fumes", etc. and then suddenly Jordan acted as if another championship was guaranteed if they had all come back.

This is why women shouldn't be allowed to watch sports.

It was pretty incongruous. The whole jist of the last two episodes was that those last two series were a near impossible slog for the Bulls and a physically and mentally spent Jordan. Then suddenly the narrative changed to suggest that another championship was inevitable if not for the two evil Jerrys.

I think anyone who is really honest with himself, no matter how big of a Bulls fan he was/is, has to admit that it was the right time to end things. Losing in the playoffs the next season would have taken some of the mystique away.

It would have been better if that had been Jordan's last shot. There was no need for him to slob around in Washington. But nobody really remembers that anyway.

They never suggested a 7th was inevitable. In fact, Jordan made it a point to say they might not have won but they deserved a shot.

Yeah. I think he wanted to continue to play, but did not have the right situation. As for winning in 1999, it was an ideal situation for the team. They got half the season off, and the conference was won by the 8th seed. The Bulls have a great chance to win the East under those circumstances. And in the finals who knows?

It's also interesting to think about some of the almost trades. Pippen for Kemp and Jalen Rose. Pippen for McGrady and Ron Mercer. Makes you wonder if they would have won more in the long run if one of those went through.

Krause identified some great talent in the would be drafts. It's too bad is actual drafts were completely awful. He just could have renounced his draft rights from about 1991 on for all the impact those players made.

This is an interesting read.

I don't know that I believe Reinsdorf did enough to stop the animosity early on, but he seems to have at least tried to get Krause to cool his shit.

Yes, THAT'S why he broke up the dynasty. He went to a fortuneteller and then had Krause tell Jackson that he could go 82-0 and then go away.

Uncle Jerry explained his role well. He tried to be the peacemaker AGAIN, but Phil wanted to walk away.
