not much of a menace. i had nuclear war drills in school and hid under my desk, but they were't much of a menace.

We all have. That doesn't mean that they were likely to attack. We also have been bombarded with propaganda regarding the Islamic "menace" for nearly 20 years too haven't we?

There was a ton of propaganda associated with the Cold War just like there has been a ton of propaganda associated with Islamic terrorism over the past 20 years
We used the imagined menace of the Soviet Union as a means of beefing up our military.

If you ever discovered who the actual U.S "mastermind" of the Cold War happened to be you would be mad as hell.

A General from Germany?
Nope.

Now I know you are 100% full of shit

If you think it was a General Fron Germany then you are even more clueless than first thought.

Also this is kind of a willful distortion of the premise of this thread. The parallels between the Soviets and PRC are really limited to atrocities. I'm pretty sure the USSR would be appalled at Chinese "communism".

The much stronger comparison is to Nazi Germany, as the Chinese use ethnic determinism to suck in unwilling neighbours like HK and Taiwan. Also, like the Nazi's, they are anti-ideology at their core. Which to me is actually a redeeming quality most of the time but in these rare instances gives the impression of an emotionless blob. Not to pluck such an apt metaphor, but the Chinese really are like a virus. They only exist to multiply and spread.

Meanwhile the Soviets, despite being intolerable, did have some soul. There's a reason for the nostalgia people have who lived under the boot of the USSR.

Except as the Soviets swallow more of their bordering satellite states the definition of "neighbour" expands. This is kind of the whole point of American foreign policy during the Cold War, it was to prevent this sort of incremental expansion of the USSR.

And even then as we've established the Soviets propped up many a communist movement around the world. Angola, Mozambique, Cuba, Rhodesia-Zimbabwe, DRC, Benin (just to name a few of the successful ones). And not even to take into the account their support of Maoism, which kind of faltered when the Gang of Four fell but still Maoism certainly wouldn't have prospered to the extent that it did without the Soviets at their back.

Eh, Ike is almost too close to the truth for LTG to say him. Certainly the most overrated president ever and pretty shit during and immediately after the war.

Didn't happen, the world was war weary and the USA was eager to crawl back into its isolationist hole.

The US could have stomped out communism at the end of World War 2. But honestly having the Soviets was good for us. Made us focus and compete. When they fell we eroded into this decadent mess where making sure "women" with dicks could use the ladies room became our top priority.

So during the era of Glasnost and Perestroika they were planning a nuclear attack against the U.S. that would have ended civilization as we know it? More conspiracy theories.

Even during the Cuban Missile Crisis when we told them to move their missiles they moved their missiles. They would have only fought if attacked. Just like they did in WWII.

Tell that to Poland and Finland. And generations later to Afghanistan. The United States also had treaties with most of the Soviet Union's neighbors, but they are not a threat.

The same way I do for pretty much everyone around here. Your irrational rage and ignorance makes that virtually impossible.

Oh and your talk about the USSR not going to war only in defense, um there numerous authors who state that from mid 1940 Stalin was getting prepared to attack Hitler before old Adolf got the drop on him.

Stalin was too busy purging the officer class to declare war on Germany. They certainly weren't prepared for Barbarossa, its well known Stalin locked himself away and had a mental breakdown once the Germans started encircling all his armies at Smolensk and Kiev.

I don't which propaganda sites you run out there. I you are a damn joke. I will have a million more which says Stalin wanted no part of Germany. He signed a non aggression pact that he didn't violate by the way. However as usual you know differently. Sure you do.

Quote:
On 26 September 1983, the nuclear early-warning system of the Soviet Union reported the launch of multiple intercontinental ballistic missiles from bases in the United States. These missile attack warnings were felt to be false alarms by Stanislav Petrov, an officer of the Soviet Air Defence Forces. This decision is seen as having prevented a retaliatory nuclear attack against the United States and its NATO allies, which would have resulted in an immediate and irrevocable escalation to a full-scale nuclear war. Investigation of the satellite warning system later determined that the system had indeed malfunctioned.

Allow noted historians Chas, WFR, Or Antarctica to explain it to you since their thoughts have so much currency around these parts. Let's see if they can explain provide info which wasn't provided to them by PJ media for a change.

Bulgaria didn't border the USSR yet they suffered under the Marxist-Leninist Zhivkov government basically until the end of the Cold War.

The USSR rolled tanks on both Czechoslovakia and Hungary. Both technically did border the USSR but that's only because Transcarpathia was inexplicably given to the Ukrainian SSR under the dubious claim that the Kievan Rus held it for a negligible amount of time back in the middle ages (it was distinctly Hungarian, well what was left of it after the war).

Then you have East Prussia, which to be fair was another menace to world peace but still the outright annexation of Koenigsburg (which continues to this day) is a feat of naked territorial greed that would be considered inconceivable to the American left if it were perpetrated by the US governemnt. That's where LTG's little Zinn ideology falls apart on any sort of closer examination. The USA, historically, is not without its misdeeds but judged against their peers of the time the American government has behaved with extraordinary restraint and lack of ambition.

So each of you 3 (Chas, WFR, And You) proceed to tell me that the Soviet Union is a threat to the U.S. because they invaded CZECHOSLOVAKIA and you wonder why I believe that you are completely out to lunch on this.
