Im talkin on the website, not print.

Everytime I go there I get blocked by their subscription page and cant read the article.

Anybody here actually pay for the subscription on the websites of Trib or Suntimes or Daily Herald?

Is it worth it you think?

Do you get it as part of a print subscription. Or you got the website subscription only?

Anyone with a half working brain can get around the paywall

Perhaps journos really do need to learn to code if they want to effectively monetize their crap.

I pay for the online subscription to the Trib but I've been meaning to cancel it for a few months.

I did the $0.99 for 8 weeks of Sunday home delivery and digital access sub for the Tribune back in mid-December because I missed doing the crosswords and my wife missed the coupons.
I used a pre-paid Visa gift card and subscribed with a throwaway email account and a fake name.
Sunday paper faithfully arrived on 4/12 with a bill for like $60 that someone named Joe Smith is gonna have to deal with....
Fucking media did this to themselves.

hey, thanks, Ogie. I didn't know about this either. It worked on a Trib article when I wasn't logged in and also incognito.

WSJ is trickier, but you can get around them with http://archive.is

We have the digital trib and sunday hard copy for $7.96 per month. Every so often they send a letter saying they are increasing the rate to $15.96. In response I call and tell them I am going to cancel. In return they tell me I can keep the $7.96 rate. This has been going on for years.

I traveled too much to get the paper delivered in Chicago. If I was at Speedway or Costco on Saturday afternoon, I'd grab a Sunday Trib until they started whacking away at the size of it.

The daily paper down here is embarrassing crap. And it is ridiculously expensive. I glance at it when I stop at Biscuitville for breakfast, as they get a few copies each weekday.

I recently subscribed to the county weekly, which is delivered by mail on Thursdays. It's only $0.70/week with a subscription. I live in the corner of the county so I'm learning about some of the rural towns southwest of me.

Fuck no!

The Sun Times comes across as one step above a tabloid. I don't care for the Tribune's politics and will never spend another dime on them.

I think if I could get home delivery out here I would still do it. I miss the physical newspaper vs reading on a tablet.

I understand that but the physical newspaper isn’t what it used to be. Seems like half the pages and certainly less local “star” columnists. They fill it with articles from other newspapers in their stable. Sad but I don’t see it getting any better.

Yeah. I know things have changed since my days of reading them daily 25 years ago. When you visit my folks I’m always struck by how small the tribune has become.

I finally broke down and got the trial Tribune subscription for online. I am giving it the minimum trial period and then I will decide if they deserve $8/month.

It’s funny how things have changed. I was a subscriber to SI for about 25 years (late 80’s on) but finally quit when I realized I really never read it anymore. It used to be a pretty pricey subscription but now they “want me back” for $20 for a whole year. That’s a fair price but I still wouldn’t read it, so no thanks.

About seven or eight years ago, ESPN The Magazine was available on some ridiculous sale. I think I paid $20 total for five years. I would toss them with my travel stuff and if I had a long weekend flight I'd rip off my name on a couple of them and toss them in my backpack to read on the plane and leave for the next person. I still sent at least half the issues straight to recycling.

I subscribed to my rural county weekly paper a few weeks ago. 24 pages, not a ridiculous amount of advertising, and a nice perspective compared to big city media. It reminds me of the early days of the Pioneer Press. And they have the mailman deliver it to my mailbox instead of tossing it on my driveway in the rain. At less than 75 cents per copy, I'm pleased with the investment.

A while back, I reorganized my budgeting (I'm semi retired, I can't spend indiscriminately any more) to just have one "content" category. Newspapers, the occasional bound book, Hulu and MLB subscriptions, professional development webinars, it's all just content.
