I'm partial to Nicky's on Archer and Austin for a Big Baby burger. Maybe with a pizza puff.

In Kenosha it would have to be between The Garage and Capt Mikes. Milwaukee Burger Company is ok for a chain type place but they only make the list because they have a better than average beer list and the best cheese curds around.

Billy's Grill in Ashburn was a terrific greasy spoon throwback diner. Thin burgers on a flat top grill, fresh cut fries.

When I was a yute, Miner-Dunn had a location in Oak Lawn, where the incredibly overrated Huck Finn is now. Probably my favorite bacon cheeseburger of all time.

My parents use my grandma's recipe and make awesome homemade burgers. They sautee diced onions with just a tiny bit of celery and put that into the mix. Gives a nice flavor and an unexpected crunch.

I haven't gotten to the House of Telegram Sam yet.

As a kid and young adult, it was Hackney's on Harms. But around 1990 they started to slip and it is a shell of itself now.

Current favorite in good weather is Paradise Pup on River, Merkt cheddar burger with grilled onions on dark rye.

My exact order. Skip the fries. The best food for an evening flight out of Midway. I've made TSA agents jealous.

The Hackney's in Palos closed, and I was incredibly underwhelmed when I went there a couple of years ago. It wasn't a terrible burger, but the way it had been talked about I had some pretty good expectations and was let down.

That was never a great location. I went there about 15 years ago and it was really bad, and the place was filthy and fully of dust around the bric a brac.

Its literally probably 2-3oz of celery in 3lbs of meat, along with a diced white onion. They are delicious.

If in Milwaukee and by the airport, go to Nite Owl. They are only open between 11:00-3:00.

I don't think onions, celery, green peppers, etc belong in the ground beef...unless you're making meatloaf or Sloppy Joes.

Best local burgers:

Lake Forest - Peanut Gallery
Lake Bluff - Maevery, Inovasi, Nick's
Highwood - Mean Weiner
Libertyville - Morgan's, Finn's, O'Toole's

Agreed, O'Tooles makes a good burger.

Back in my NW Suburb days, nothing beat Brandt's in Palatine or The Assembly in Hoffman Estates.

Ok, not technically a burger, but the garlic bread poor-boy from Merichka's in Crest Hill is awesome.

The Assembly is still good if you sit at the bar and have the bartender make you the burger on the front bar grill. From the kitchen it is a lot more erratic.

I don't think I ever sat at a table in that place...

I did that same thing 20 years ago at The Assembly (burger at the bar) and it was great. Sounds like it's still the same.

Yeah, it's awesome if you can survive it without having a heart attack.

That's one of the things my dad would talk about and that I'd hear skeptically. Until I felt what he was talking about when I was about 46 and got a big pork Cemitas with cheese and medium salsa.

And reading about this sandwich, I'll sign off for a half at best.

I'm underwhelmed by that place. They take forever to make the burgers and they come off really tall and narrow rather than wide and flat.

After their old place closed they should have held out for a place with a larger kitchen when reopening. The place they're in is tiny and the kitchen still can't keep up.
